ST Hudson Engineers is the great firm who was at the center of our big pier rebuild projects in 2021-23 and way back in the early 2000s. On February 3rd they chartered a helicopter to get views of the ice, since they have been involved in many projects on the river (all bigger than ours!). They kindly shared these of our neighborhood with us today. Impressive, isn't it? They do some huge projects. See their FB page here: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100069371258631

Riverton Yacht Club is one of the most iconic images of our town. As the club enters its 160th season, come on a winter night as Riverton Borough Historian Roger Prichard takes you through the images and stories of this great place. Will also include many photos and videos of the recent major rebuilding project (what WERE they doing all that time? Come and find out!)

Note that this is being held at the sponsoring Porch Club, at 4th and Howard. (No, not on the pier, where it will probably be 25 degrees and blowing like crazy. Tempting, but no.) The Porch Club and the Historical Society of Riverton are the kind sponsors of the event. Get there early!

We thought lots of folks would like a look at our progress on the major reinforcing of the part of the Riverton pier last refurbished in 1957. It's all in the capable hands of our marine contractor, Agate Construction, Inc.

Here, the 66-year old steel bulkhead is being surrounded by a new heavy, galvanized structural frame to stop it from moving. In the next steps, the frame will anchor strong new tie rods that will hold everything tightly in place, hopefully for decades.

Don't worry, the pier's still there ... just squint a little (and use your imagination). Tomorrow should clear up. Stop by anytime and read our historical marker, now 5 years old and holding up well, produced by the Historical Society of Riverton. Researched and written by our Roger Prichard, it engages those walking on Bank Avenue frequently. Read it yourself up close here: https://rivertonhistory.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/Riverton-Steamboat-Landing-sign.jpg

Pier reconstruction is about to begin - and when it's over you won't be able to tell anything is different! But you’ll know we've bought the pier many more decades in its eternal battle with the mighty Delaware River.

The third of the steel bulkheading that makes up the foundation of our island that faces the shore was driven in 1957 and is in pretty good shape (miraculously) except that it needs major internal reinforcing to stop it from bowing outwards. If we don't do this now, our engineers tell us it will fail... and that would be catastrophic to this historic treasure!

Riverton Steamboat Landing Foundation has retained the best marine construction engineers and hired a highly experienced marine contractor. Fundraising is ongoing and with the generous donations from the members of the Riverton Yacht Club, community members and a major grant from New Jersey Historic Trust, the project can begin.

The parking lot will be used as a staging area and be fenced and off-limits for the next few months. And if all goes as planned, when they've cleaned up, it will look like nothing has changed! But it will keep looking like nothing has changed for decades, and isn't that exactly what historic preservation is about?

If you’d like to donate, please visit http://www.rivertonsteamboatlanding.org/support.html. All donations to the RSLF will be used to preserve and maintain the physical structure of the historic Riverton Steamboat Landing pier and building, to prevent a recurrence of the deterioration that occurred at the end of the 20th century.

Our HUGE thanks to Riverton's own Carlos Rogers and his iconic Historic Riverton Criterium for choosing our Steamboat Landing Foundation as the recipient for the proceeds of their magnificent bike racing event this year. That's one big check because it's a big donation: Five Thousand Dollars toward our major reinforcing project for our pier! Thank you, Carlos!

We're making good progress toward our fundraising goal but aren't there yet ... so it's your turn: be like Carlos and pitch in to help save this Delaware River treasure. Every donation helps, small or large (and is tax-deductible!). Pay with a check or (easy) online, just scroll down on the page at this link. Thank you! http://www.rivertonsteamboatlanding.org/support.html
