Pier reconstruction is about to begin - and when it's over you won't be able to tell anything is different! But you’ll know we've bought the pier many more decades in its eternal battle with the mighty Delaware River.
The third of the steel bulkheading that makes up the foundation of our island that faces the shore was driven in 1957 and is in pretty good shape (miraculously) except that it needs major internal reinforcing to stop it from bowing outwards. If we don't do this now, our engineers tell us it will fail... and that would be catastrophic to this historic treasure!
Riverton Steamboat Landing Foundation has retained the best marine construction engineers and hired a highly experienced marine contractor. Fundraising is ongoing and with the generous donations from the members of the Riverton Yacht Club, community members and a major grant from New Jersey Historic Trust, the project can begin.
The parking lot will be used as a staging area and be fenced and off-limits for the next few months. And if all goes as planned, when they've cleaned up, it will look like nothing has changed! But it will keep looking like nothing has changed for decades, and isn't that exactly what historic preservation is about?
If you’d like to donate, please visit http://www.rivertonsteamboatlanding.org/support.html. All donations to the RSLF will be used to preserve and maintain the physical structure of the historic Riverton Steamboat Landing pier and building, to prevent a recurrence of the deterioration that occurred at the end of the 20th century.
