ARMANDO ROSALES is here!!!
is the 2nd artist in this years cohort. He is a sculptor and experimental percussionist whose work explores the intersections of the intimate, institutional and political. Through sculpture and installation , he examines materiality, sound, and questions how forces shaping behavior connect to the body as a site of learning and transformation.
While at RAIR, he has been developing a series of kinetic and static sculptures that double as musical instruments and muted objects. Through material investigation, contact microphones, and friction, he has created a range of soundscapes built around slow, rhythmic cycles.
Mark your calendars for Saturday May 23rd at 530pm. Armando will be presenting the percussive sculptures made from materials found on site and will be joined by local percussionists to activate and improvise through an installation of his work in the mechanics Barn at RAIR.

More details on the performance coming soon.

A couple weekends ago we hosted our first ever RAIR Flea Market!! 100% of the material that we had for sale was sourced directly from the waste stream by RAIR staff. Although it was a rainy and cold day we had a huge turnout of folks who were able to buy some cool stuff, take a tour of the recycling facility, and enjoy popcorn and hotdogs. All these goodies were on their last stop before heading to landfill so THANK YOU for saving them and giving them a new life 💚 dm us pictures of the things you got in their new space or show us what kind of art your creating from them, we want to see!

Up next for our series of highlighting artists who have kindly donated pieces for our upcoming Trash Bash Silent Auction, we’re putting the limelight on Raúl Romero! 🎉 Raúl’s interest in intercommunication between people and the environment sits at the root of his practice. His work pulls from technological histories, communication tools, and ancient artifacts, such as the Arecibo Observatory, sound production tools, and his Puerto Rican ancestry.

Raúl was a resident at RAIR in 2015. During his residency, he examined the recycling facility’s environment and slowly discovered the vastness of the waste stream. He decided to present his findings through a series of short videos, which included the use of a drone to capture words surrounded by a “stage set,” which were actually trash piles. The words were spelled out with compiled waste, which could only be read from a bird’s eye view.

We’d like to take this moment to appreciate Raúl’s unwavering support and his donation of his piece “Coquí in the garden azul 5:05 - 5:27,” pictured in slide #2, which is an aluminum spectrogram (“sound painting”), made with the help of the sounds of a Puerto Rican coquí intertwining with the hustle and bustle of the Taller Puertorriqueño community in El Centro de Oro, Philadelphia. 🐸💚
