Our community is strongest when we look out for one another. Emergencies can be unexpected, so we’ve put together some helpful tips to ensure that every member of our tribal family—especially our elders and those with disabilities—stays safe and prepared.
Building Our Safety Net Together:
Create Your Team: Identify family, friends, or neighbors you trust to check in on you. Let them know where your supplies are kept and consider sharing a spare key.
Stay Connected: Download the FEMA App for real-time weather alerts and keep a written list of important contacts in a watertight container in your kit.
Pack for Your Needs: Beyond basics like food and water, customize your emergency kit. Include a multi-day supply of medications, copies of your important health records, extra batteries for hearing aids, and specialized equipment or communication tools you rely on daily.
Plan for Pets & Service Animals: Remember to pack food and water for your animals. Service animals are allowed in emergency shelters, but it’s good to have a backup plan for other pets.
Stay Cool: Extreme heat can be especially dangerous for many. Arrange for regular check-ins during heat warnings, identify cooling centers, and talk to your doctor about how your medications interact with heat.
A Simple Next Step:
Take a moment this week to talk with your household or neighbors about your plan. If you have a neighbor who might need extra help, please reach out and ask, "How can I support you during an emergency?"
Let’s keep our community safe and resilient. Stay informed and look out for each other!
