South Valley Rotary

South Valley Rotary All are welcome to join us! We meet Thursdays at noon at Chubby’s Cafe at 1276 W 12600 S in Riverton. noon in 2004; and have continued meeting there to date.

The South Valley Rotary serves the communities of Bluffdale, Draper, Herriman and Riverton. The Draper Riverton Rotary Club was officially chartered July 1, 2002. Russell Cannon was the 1st and founding president of the club. Some of the original charter members include Tim Nicolaysen, Sam Leaver and Russ Cannon. Mayor Smith joined shortly thereafter. The Club was originally chartered with 33 chart

ered members, which represented a good cross section of the community businesses and banks. Since there was no place to meet in Draper, the club met for breakfast at Mimi's restaurant in Sandy every Tuesday at 7 AM. The first project of the Club was the construction of a Park; which was completed in 2010; and is located on the east side of the Jordan River just northerly of 126 South. The Park involved many fund raising projects in the intervening years; and was paid for in 2010, when it was paid for by our club, and turned over to the City of Draper. In June of 2002, an inaugural "chartering" dinner and celebration was held at a local country club with a very large attendance. The Club negotiated with Chuck a Rama, which was building a new restaurant in Draper, to enclose some meeting rooms; in order that we could meet there when completed; and we began meeting at the Draper Chuck a Rama at Thurs. We have continued with many successful fund raising charitable activities to date.

We had the pleasure today of hearing from Hannah and Aspen who are nutritionists from Harmon's Grocery. Did you know you can talk to a nutritionist at Harmon's and even have them help with your grocery shopping? If you could use assistance in deciding what to buy and/or you're on a special diet, you can request their help. How cool, right!
They had a plethora of information and below are some nuggets they shared that may be helpful. They are not doctors and neither are we so definitely consult your physician regarding your individual circumstances. This is NOT medical advice.

-Having a balanced meal is super important (see the graph provided for the ideal proportions)
-Have protein with every meal or snack
-Pairing carbs with protein helps to balance blood sugar and prevent glucose spikes
-Naturally occurring sugar is ok (like that in fruit)
-Added sugars are something to watch out for and be aware of, less than 50g a day
-Increase fiber intake (fruits, veggies and whole grains), 25-30g of fiber day (it varies for men and women)
-Look for a higher % of nutrients, vitamins and minerals when reading labels and making purchases
-Saturated fat is a concern when over consumed (marbled meat, lard, butter, coconut oil)
-Unsaturated fat is better than saturated (olive oil or avocado oil)
-Loin meats, turkey, chicken and fish are better meat choices
-Balancing amounts of omega 3 (fish) and omega 6 (seed oils, etc.) fatty acids is important
-Many people consume too many omega 6’s and don’t get enough omega 3’s (too many omega 6's can cause inflammation)
-True lemon or true lime added to water can give it flavor without the sugar and calories of other beverages

A good question to ask is what can I add to my meal to make it more balanced?

We had the pleasure of hearing from this year's scholarship recipients Sam Petit, C**t Livingston and Joshua Didenhover. Sam was the recipient of the $1000 Russ Cannon scholarship and C**t and Joshua each received $500. It was great to receive a visit from them and hear about their service experiences and their future plans 😊

We're here at the Taipei Rotary Convention. We're in the House of Friendship. I guess the Fellowship for Artificital Intelligence would have some humans in their booth. Guess not!

A couple weeks ago in our weekly meeting we got to learn about Analane's Angel Apparel. We were so moved by the work of Analane and her community of helpers. They create angel gowns for lost babies out of wedding dresses for grieving parents and gift them to hospitals across the nation and the world. The package that is received includes burial clothing, a crocheted blanket and a bracelet for the baby and one for the family to have as a keepsake . This nonprofit was birthed in memory of the angel children her family has lost. There is a variety of needs if you'd like to assist in furthering this beautiful labor of love. These are the current requests/needs:

-If you are traveling and would be willing to drop donations at a hospital in the area you are visiting that would be wonderful. Everything is arranged in advance and you would just drop the items off and take a photo with the nurses if you're willing. These donations have made their way to 37 states and 10 countries so far.
-Place an angel apparel donation to Ireland (she has the place to get them to but could use help with the expense of shipping the items, international shipping is spendy)
-The non profit affiliation renewal fees for the State of Utah ($)
-Renewal of website and domain name ($)
-Create the "Legacy of Lace" video about the start and finish of making angel apparel
-Thank you gifts for dedicated volunteers
-Purchase of needed supplies; transport wagon, storage space for supply transition, printed materials, DRM system
-Donations of wedding dresses, sewing threads, ribbons and beads

If you can assist with any of these items, please reach out to them. This is such a beautiful gift to grieving families and can alleviate them trying to figure out clothing for their lost love in the midst of a difficult time.

At our meeting last week we got to hear from senator Dan McCay who represents District 18. He talked about how the tenants of Rotary apply in his life and shared about a variety of subjects. We got to pick his brain about taxes. In his words, he nerds out on that subject so we took advantage of his knowledge on the subject. We are grateful he took time to pay us a visit.
