The Riverside-San Bernardino chapter of CNPS works to conserve native plants and habitats through education, native plant gardening, science, advocacy, and land stewardship. The California Native Plant Society (CNPS) works to protect California's native plant heritage and preserve it for future generations. Urban and agricultural growth, the spread of nonnative weeds, expanding knowledge regarding

sustainable timber and grazing practices, and frequently inadequate land use planning all elevate the essential need to prevent the decline in California's native plant diversity.

Get to know the rare and endemic Orocopia sage in a presentation by Melanie Davis of the UC Riverside Center for Conservation Biology. Orocopia sage is a perennial native member of the sage family (Lamiaceae) that occurs only in Orocopia and Chocolate Mountains in the Colorado Desert of Riverside & Imperial Counties. During surveys of known populations of Orocopia sage, Davis found abundant and healthy populations at high elevation sites previously unknown to science. At lower elevations where these plants once flourished, the research team found unhealthy or dead populations. Melanie will discuss what's going on with these populations and what it means for a species in one of the most extreme climates in a rapidly changing environment.

Who pollinates lemon lilies?

oin us for this fascinating spring lecture focusing on one of our most beautiful local plant species. On Saturday, April 18 at 10 a.m, Dr. Gordon Pratt will talk about the sphinx moths that have been recorded on lemon lilies and those that may be potential pollinators in our local mountains. He will describe citizen science project that is beginning this spring to understand which sphinx moths pollinate lemon lilies and the importance of each species. Caterpillar food plants for the various sphinx moths will also be determined. Don’t miss this presentation!

San Bernardino Valley Audubon Society invites you to join them for our April general meeting, where Allison Autry, a PhD candidate at Claremont Botanic Garden and Director of the Native Orchid Conference, will present “An Introduction to the Native Orchids of California, with a special focus on the San Bernardino Mountains.” This is an in-person meeting and will be held Wednesday, April 15 at 7 PM at the San Bernardino County Museum (2024 Orange Tree Lane) in Redlands. We will have food, a silent disco, walking tours, and postcard writing. What does it mean for a plant — or a person — to
belong to a place?
In this opening workshop of the 2026 Native Plant
Workshop Series, Mike Evans invites participants to
reconsider gardening as participation in living
systems shaped by climate, soil, and time. Native
plants are not simply aesthetic choices — they are
expressions of regional identity, ecological history,
and environmental responsibility.

Drawing on more than four decades of native plant
horticulture, Mike explores how Southern California’s
landscapes function and why working with place —
rather than imposing upon it — leads to healthier,
more resilient gardens. This reflective and
foundational class sets the philosophical tone for the
year of workshops ahead.
This workshop is presented in partnership by the
Environmental Nature Center (ENC) and the California Native Horticulture Foundation (CNHF), reflecting a shared commitment
to advancing place-based ecological education in Orange County.

About the Instructor:
Mike Evans is President of the California Native Horticulture Foundation and founder of Tree of Life Nursery in San Juan
Capistrano, which for over 45 years has been one of the largest native plant nurseries in California. A nurseryman, horticulturist,
educator, and speaker, Mike has helped shape the practice of native plant gardening throughout the state.

Note: Parking will be challenging on this day, so if the ENC parking lot is full, please feel free to park in the neighboring high
school lot or along the street.
