The Riverside-San Bernardino chapter of CNPS works to conserve native plants and habitats through education, native plant gardening, science, advocacy, and land stewardship. The California Native Plant Society (CNPS) works to protect California's native plant heritage and preserve it for future generations. Urban and agricultural growth, the spread of nonnative weeds, expanding knowledge regarding sustainable timber and grazing practices, and frequently inadequate land use planning all elevate the essential need to prevent the decline in California's native plant diversity.

It's Fall native planting time! Join us, in person or online via Zoom, with Orchid Black who will help you prepare for native planting season and get ready for our upcoming native plant sales. Discover how native plants create healthy, vibrant gardens that support bees, butterflies, hummingbirds, and other beneficial wildlife. Orchid will share plant recommendations, design ideas, and simple ways to make a difference, plus a peek at how to use the Calscape Pollinator Hub to attract the greatest diversity of pollinators and wildlife to your garden.

It's plant sale time and we're looking for volunteers. The CNPS RSB Inland Empire Native Plant Sale is Saturday, November 7, 2026. Volunteers are needed on plant sale day to help with sales, answering questions, staffing CNPS info table, clean-up and post-sale inventory. It's a fun way to promote native plants. The San Gorgonio Pass Water Agency is hosting a FREE Gardening with Native Plants community workshop in Beaumont on Thursday, September 10th, with support from IERCD and the UC Master Gardeners. Master Gardener (and CNPS-RSB Board member) Becky Levers will lead the workshop and answer questions from all who attend!

Participants will learn practical tips for creating a beautiful, water-wise garden with California native plants, including how native landscaping can conserve water and provide valuable habitat for local wildlife. Additional details are below:

November will be here before we know it! SAVE THE DATES for our 2026 November Native Plant Sales. Buy plants for gardens in the Inland Empire at our Inland Empire Native Plant Sale in Riverside on Saturday, November 7, 2026 from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Once again, we'll be at the Riverside-Corona Resource Conservation District. One week later, you can purchase native plants for gardens in the low desert on Saturday, November 14, 2026 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at our plant sale at the Unitarian Universalist Church of the Desert in Rancho Mirage. As a reminder, Prop 45 is funded by corporate interests and would dismantle California’s bedrock environmental law, the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA). It would apply to a range of harmful projects, from data centers and heavy industrial facilities to freeway expansions and forest clear-cutting, contaminating our air and water and leaving taxpayers with higher medical expenses, utility bills, and pollution clean-up costs.

Get to know the rare and endemic Orocopia sage in a presentation by Melanie Davis of the UC Riverside Center for Conservation Biology. Orocopia sage is a perennial native member of the sage family (Lamiaceae) that occurs only in Orocopia and Chocolate Mountains in the Colorado Desert of Riverside & Imperial Counties. During surveys of known populations of Orocopia sage, Davis found abundant and healthy populations at high elevation sites previously unknown to science. At lower elevations where these plants once flourished, the research team found unhealthy or dead populations. Melanie will discuss what's going on with these populations and what it means for a species in one of the most extreme climates in a rapidly changing environment.
