Important Information for Families:
Protect Your Loved One’s Medicare Coverage
When a loved one enters a Skilled Nursing Facility (SNF), families are often focused on recovery, rehabilitation, and planning for the next steps in care. But there is another important detail to keep in mind: Medicare coverage and health plan enrollment.
According to guidance from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), a Skilled Nursing Facility cannot independently change or cancel a resident’s Medicare Advantage or Medicare Part D prescription drug plan enrollment.
✅ Here are a few things every family should know:
🔹 Only the Medicare beneficiary, their legal representative, or someone legally authorized to act on their behalf can request enrollment changes or voluntary disenrollment.
🔹 If a loved one’s insurance coverage changes unexpectedly while in a skilled nursing facility, it’s important to ask questions and investigate.
🔹 Unauthorized enrollment changes may be reviewed and potentially reversed by CMS when the required documentation is missing.
