The 14th Annual Riverside County History Symposium was a great success! We've heard many positive comments about the venue, speakers, and food. Unfortunately, we had to cancel the tour afterward because of high winds, but many people were enticed to come back and look at what Flabob Airport has to offer! Thanks to everyone who attended.

“28 Days of Riverside County History in Postcards!” Palm Desert Realty Office, late 1940s. Almost every town in Southern California started with a realty office, and this one was the first one in Palm Desert. Located a bit north of the intersection of Hwy 111 and the Pines-to-Palms Highway, this office catered to the first newcomers to the new town, offering lots and acreage in the new desert community.

“28 Days of Riverside County History in Postcards!” U. S. Naval Hospital, 1940s. This building began its life in 1929 as the Lake Norconian Resort. Owner Rex Clark spared little expense in creating a beautiful grand hotel in the small town of Norco. Unfortunately, it opened at the dawn of the Great Depression, and never really was successful. On December 6, 1941, it was sold to the U. S. Navy and went on to house some of America's first casualties of World War II.

“28 Days of Riverside County History in Postcards!” Magnolia Avenue in Riverside, c. 1905. Magnolia Avenue was set up as a grand boulevard by Samuel Cary Evans as a way to highlight and show off the many thousands of acres he had procured in the small town of Riverside in the 1870s. This thoroughfare allowed sellers to take clients down through the territory and show off the lands available for investment. Magnolia Avenue was copied in several nearby cities, including Ontario, Redlands, and Beaumont.

“28 Days of Riverside County History in Postcards!” Tent Camping at Murrieta Hot Springs, c. 1910. Murrieta Hot Springs was and is still one of Riverside County's largest hot springs attraction. Known for thousands of years, the springs have been a popular place to "take the waters." Many people with lung ailments came to Southern California on advice of their doctors to hopefully clear them up - and it worked to a certain extent! This view is one of the smaller accommodations at MHS.

“28 Days of Riverside County History in Postcards!” Hemet Women's Club Building, c. 1930. Many cities throughout the country had multiple service organizations, which offered both social interactions and community service. One of the largest was the Women's Club. In Hemet, their club building mirrored the pueblo/Indian architecture that was popular and championed for a while as a unique way of expressing both Hemet and San Jacinto's close ties to the Ramona story.
