The professional fiduciary is the most consequential person in your probate file. Are you working with them — or around them? ⚖️

The Estate Planning, Probate & Elder Law Section's May session brings Jennifer Fejzic — Licensed Professional Fiduciary with Probate Fiduciary Services, Inc. — to walk through what real collaboration looks like: when to bring the fiduciary in, how to structure the working relationship, and how to keep complex estates from becoming contested ones.

Ms. Fejzic began her career as a probate paralegal at Hartnell, Horspool & Fox in Redlands in 1991 and has been licensed as a professional fiduciary since 2018. Her work spans straightforward estate settlements through complex matters involving disputes, large asset management, and court oversight.

Two SCOTUS decisions. A whole lot of questions for school clients. ⚖️

The May General Membership Meeting takes on Mahmoud v. Taylor and Mirabelli v. Bonta — and what they mean for the schools, districts, and county offices of education that turn to counsel for answers.

Does a public school violate parents' religious exercise when it exposes elementary students to instruction on gender and sexuality without parental notice or an opportunity to opt out? Does it violate parents' religious exercise and due process rights when it withholds information about a child's gender presentation at school?

Three attorneys from Atkinson, Andelson, Loya, Ruud & Romo (AALRR) walk through both decisions and the practical questions they leave behind:

⚖️ Brooke E. Jimenez, Partner — education law, Title IX, employee discipline, harassment and discrimination complaints, contract administration, labor negotiations

⚖️ David E. Robinett, Senior Counsel — personnel and employment law, special education, facilities, and collective bargaining

⚖️ David P. Rivera, Senior Associate — general education law and civil litigation for school districts and county offices of education

Twelve people. One verdict. The hour you spend picking them is the hour that wins or loses the case. ⚖️

The RCBA Criminal Law Section's May session brings Souley Diallo, Esq. — Managing Attorney of The Diallo Law Firm — to walk through the fundamentals of jury selection in criminal cases. Voir dire strategy, reading the room, the questions that surface bias and the ones that just waste your strikes.

Before opening his own firm, Mr. Diallo served with the Riverside County Public Defender's Office, where he was twice named Trial Attorney of the Year. His practice now focuses on serious felony and white collar defense in state and federal court, alongside professional licensing defense for doctors, accountants, insurance brokers, and real estate professionals.

The questions you've been carrying around? Bring them Monday. ⚖️

How to draft a proposed order the bench will actually sign. When to push a continuance and when to let it go. What makes one evidentiary objection land and another get waved off.

The everyday procedural stuff — the calls that shape your case more than any published opinion — answered by a judge who spent decades making them.

Hon. Harold W. Hopp (Ret.) hosts the Civil Litigation Roundtable on Zoom. You bring the questions. He brings the answers. Lunch hour, done.

This month: open Q&A first, then Judge Hopp walks through the new procedure for Statements of Decision.

You won the post-trial motion. Or maybe you lost it. Either way — can you appeal? ⚖️

The RCBA Appellate Law Section's May session takes on one of the most consequential threshold questions in California practice: which post-judgment rulings are appealable, and which aren't.

John O. Lanahan, Esq. of the Law Office of John Lanahan in San Diego presents "Plead, OK; Appeal, Maybe" — a focused look at the appealability of post-judgment rulings. A graduate of the University of Chicago Law School, Mr. Lanahan has been admitted to the California Bar since 1988 and practices appellate law and federal criminal defense.

What a moment. ⚖️

On Thursday, April 23, the Riverside County Bar Association and the Riverside Superior Court honored 28 high school juniors from across Riverside County at the 43rd Annual RCBA Good Citizenship Award ceremony — held in Department 1 of the Historic Courthouse, the room where so much of our county's legal history has been written.

Each honoree was selected by their school principal for exemplary citizenship — the everyday, often unseen work of showing up for classmates, community, and conscience. These are the students faculty point to when asked who reflects the best of their school.

Recipients received a monetary award and certificates from the RCBA and the Lawyer Referral Service, along with commendations from the Riverside Superior Court and from state and federal offices. A standing-room moment for the families in the gallery.

Our thanks to RCBA President Megan Demshki for welcoming the group, and to Presiding Judge Jacqueline Jackson, Judge Dorothy McLaughlin, and Judge Sophia Choi for their remarks and presentations. Gratitude as well to the offices of Congressman Ken Calvert, Assemblywoman Leticia Castillo, Assemblymember Dr. Corey Jackson, Assemblywoman Natasha Johnson, Senator Kelly Seyarto, and Assemblymember Greg Wallis for joining us.

Law Day reminds us that liberty under law isn't an abstraction — it lives in the citizens we raise. Congratulations to every honoree.

The future of this county is in good hands. 😊
