Nathan was a 22 year old student at the University of New Haven and a fantastic athlete. Whether it be organized sports or pulling a wiffle ball and bat or football out of his car, he was always ready to get the game going. Nate was an avid ice hockey fan and player throughout his high school and college years. He had joined a recreational league in Shelton, Connecticut when he arrived at school i
n 2003. On October 25, 2007 with three seconds left in the game, Nathan blocked the desperation shot from a member of the opposing team and saved the game for his team. However, in doing so paid the ultimate price. The hero of the game died in the hospital emergency room that night. In keeping his memory alive, his family and friends, have established a memorial fund in his name. Through fundraisers throughout the year, the largest being, “Block the Shot,” a motorcycle run and block party held each September. The Nathan D. Crowell Memorial Fund has raised over $85, 000 and have distributed the proceeds to many wonderful causes and events. To begin, The Nathan D. Crowell Memorial Endowed Scholarship at the University of New Haven, where Nathan was a Criminal Justice major, was established. This fall, the eighth recipients of the Nathan D. Crowell Memorial Endowed Scholarship will be selected. This past winter a third donation was made to the Greater Providence Youth Hockey Association. With these funds GPYHA was able to host The Third Inaugural Nathan D. Crowell Memorial Hockey Tournament last March at Meehan Auditorium in Providence, RI. The tournament was a great success and with continued partnership with this organization this tournament will continue in Nathan’s memory. This was our first year making a contribution to Lisa Sherber's Jimmy Fund Teen's Program, in April 2016, our donation was able to make it possible for 25 teens from the Jimmy Fund Cancer Clinic to attend the Boston Bruins game, meet the NESN crew and the players after the game. In addition to these wonderful contributions we have also distributed funds to other organizations such as the Nathan D Crowell Scholarship at East Providence High School, where he attended, as well as donations made to help rebuild the gym at East Providence High School and to support families of Sandy Hook Elementary School. These are tremendous accomplishments, and we hope that past as well as future supporters feel great pride in knowing that their support will positively impact future generations of students and athletes as they pursue their higher education goals and athletic achievements. Crowell Memorial Fund would like to ask for your help in supporting our event by making a donation for our raffle table or helping with the other expenses needed to make this event a big success, such as; food, paper good’s, etc.
