🚒 Riverhead Fire Department – 2026 Apparatus Wet Down 💦

Yesterday, October 17th, the Riverhead Fire Department held a traditional wet-down ceremony at Fire Headquarters to celebrate the addition of three new vehicles to our fleet: Engine 6-2-14 (Eagle Hose Company No. 4), Brush Response Attack Truck 6-2-8 (Reliable Hose & Engine Company No. 1), and Chief's vehicle 6-2-31.

Following the ceremonial blessing and dedication, the new vehicles participated in the longstanding fire service tradition of passing beneath streams of water provided by our neighboring departments.

We extend our sincere appreciation to the Flanders Fire Department, NY-Keeper of the Pines, Jamesport Fire Department, Wading River Fire Department, East Moriches Hook and Ladder Co. #1, Cutchogue Fire Department, and Ridge Fire Departments for joining us and participating in the wet down.

A special thank-you to the Hampton Bays Firemen for providing standby coverage at our headquarters and responding to three automatic fire alarms during the event, ensuring our district remained protected throughout the ceremony.

We also thank the Riverhead Fire District Board of Fire Commissioners for their continued support and commitment to providing our members with the equipment needed to serve and protect our community.

Thank you to everyone who helped make this occasion possible!

🚨 Smoke & Carbon Monoxide Alarm Safety

Working smoke and carbon monoxide alarms provide critical early warning when every second counts.

Take a few minutes to:
• Test your alarms regularly
• Make sure alarms are installed throughout your home
• Replace batteries or alarm units as needed
• Create and practice a home escape plan with your family

Preparedness starts before an emergency happens.

🔋 Charge Into Fire Safety

Lithium-ion batteries power many of the devices we use every day. A few simple habits can help reduce the risk of a fire:

• Use the correct charger
• Charge devices on a hard, stable surface
• Keep batteries and charging devices away from heat
• Stop using damaged, swollen or overheating batteries

Stay alert while charging and always follow the manufacturer’s instructions.

🔥 Fire Prevention Week | October 4–10

Fire Prevention Week begins today, and this year’s theme is “Charge into Fire Safety™: Safe Charging Is a Superpower.”

Rechargeable lithium-ion batteries are part of everyday life—from phones and laptops to power tools, e-bikes and scooters. Using the proper charger, charging devices safely, and recognizing signs of a damaged battery can help prevent fires.

We’ll be sharing more safe-charging tips throughout the week.

Working Structure Fire – Sound Avenue

Early this morning, the Riverhead Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire on Sound Avenue. Upon arrival, crews encountered heavy smoke and located a barn involved in fire behind the residence. Firefighters forced entry and quickly began fire suppression operations, bringing the fire under control within approximately 30 minutes.

Due to the location and water-supply needs, crews deployed nearly 1,000 feet of hose and established a relay operation to maintain a continuous water supply throughout the incident.

The Riverhead Fire Department was assisted by the Jamesport Fire Department with a Rapid Intervention Team, the Wading River Fire Department with a tanker and ladder, and the Mattituck Fire Department with a ladder. The Flanders Fire Department, NY-Keeper of the Pines provided standby coverage at Riverhead Fire Headquarters. The Hampton Bays Firemen Department was requested for additional manpower but was disregarded while en route after the fire was brought under control.

We thank all of our mutual aid partners for their assistance and coverage. The scene was subsequently turned over to the Riverhead Town Fire Marshal.
