Time and time again, birds show us just how resilient, determined, and extraordinary they are. This incredible boy is certainly no exception. We’re thrilled for you to meet him!
A few weeks ago, we received a message asking if we could take in a single male guinea fowl. He had been brought to a veterinary clinic to be euthanized after breaking both of his legs. Thankfully, the incredible team there decided he deserved a chance. Instead of giving up on him, they committed to helping him heal. After months of intensive care and endless love from his medical team, he made a remarkable recovery. Aside from a few scars and a slight limp, you would never know the hardships he endured. Once he was healed, the people who saved him and loved him so much knew he deserved and needed a safe home where he could make friends, do all his guinea things, and enjoy the life he fought so hard for. When they reached out to us, we felt honored to be trusted with his care, and our answer was a resounding yes. Fazbear arrived at the sanctuary and fit in seamlessly. He is spunky yet gentle, curious and bold, with the sweetest heart, the loudest voice, and the most precious presence. He and Freddie are already getting along wonderfully, and he has quickly made friends with the rest of the barn critters. After all he has been through in these past months, we are looking forward to him simply being happy, content, and loved in sanctuary. Welcome to your forever home, Faz. We love you so much!

A good day in the horse field. These rescued horses are safe and at ease now, and there’s an overwhelming peace that comes with it. Watching them like this never loses its meaning when you know where they came from. This is what sanctuary is all about!

Schmidt, our very special superhero turkey, came to us after suffering severe neglect. He was overfed and left without any proper care, and because of what he endured, he lost the ability to use his legs. Over the past year we’ve worked tirelessly to heal his body in every way possible. From day one, we promised to fight alongside him and never give up unless he did. And he never did. We explored every avenue to try to save his legs. We gave it time. We sought repeated expert guidance. Some days felt hopeful, some days were heavy. Through all of it, Schmidt stayed sweet and trusting. If you’ve met him, you know his spirit. He grooms his feathers when you scratch the right spot. He chats and chirps when we approach. He lights up at mealtime, flapping for his favorite foods. He leans into affection, loves being outside in the sun, and wakes up excited for the day. His quality of life has always guided every decision. If he fights, we fight. And no matter what’s going on with his physical body, his soul is full of joy, hope, and resilience. He wakes up every day excited to see what the future holds. So, we do the same.
It had become clear his left leg was a constant source of infection and pain, and it would not recover. After exhausting our options, we made the difficult decision with our vets to amputate. The goal was simple: relieve his pain and protect his future. It is impossible not to feel anger at what neglect did to a bird who was born healthy. He should still be walking. He should still have both legs. But because of what a human did, that is not his reality. What is his reality is that he wants to live, and he loves to live, and we made him a promise. Sanctuary means we do not give up when things are hard. It means making the difficult decisions that give someone a real chance. It means fighting every day, and staying in it for the long haul and whatever that may entail. There is anger in our hearts for what he went through, and for what happened to him, but there is also hope. Hope in new chances, and in the overwhelming courage of a turkey who refuses to give up. About a month ago, a woman reached out to us about her horse. She had planned to bring him to a nearby equine rescue, but that organization moved to a new location before he was able to be placed with them. Terrified that she’d be unable to safely place her beloved boy, she kept searching. When I read the message she sent, the situation was very clear: she loved him so much, but she was facing trying times and was unable to continue caring for him. He is around 20 years old and he is not a rideable horse, making placement even harder to find. I read her words, and I saw him, and I knew we needed to help both human and horse in this situation. We’re grateful she trusted us with him and that she was so committed to finding safety and peace for her sweet boy. With us, he will live out the rest of his life surrounded by new friends, lots of love, and utmost peace.
He came home to the sanctuary a few days ago, and he fit right in. After living with 2 mini donkeys and no horses for the past 10 years, we weren’t sure how introductions would go. Luckily, he is settling in seamlessly. We’d like you all to meet the very handsome Caraway. He is as lovely as can be. A truly wise, kind-hearted, and calm gentleman. We love him already, and Audrey and Cloud are welcoming him nicely. Welcome to sanctuary, Caraway. We love you so much already and can’t wait to see what the future with you holds!

Ladybug is so precious. She is a feisty little firecracker, but still so deeply kindhearted and sweet. She is such a tough lady and despite all she’s been through, she is such a happy and determined girl. She is our first ever quail at the sanctuary, and we are absolutely delighted to get to know her more and more. She certainly inspires me, and I’m grateful for moments like this where I’m able to just sit with her in peace. We love you, little Ladybug!

The day I met Arlo and Fergus, my heart grew ten sizes. I stepped into that trailer and when I came out, everything felt different. I was in awe of these two amazing creatures who were, at the time, tiny frail babies with hay twine embedded in their necks. Still, I saw two magnificent boys who amazed me. Since that day in 2020, Arlo and Fergus have blown me away every day. The most giant cows I’ve ever met, standing at over 6 feet tall and around 2500 pounds, yet also the most loving and sweet-hearted boys. Arlo is rowdy, a bit overbearing, and sometimes even dangerous; but Fergus was a kind, considerate, stoic presence who was always the calm in Arlo’s storm. He was a constant; you could always count on seeing his sweet face and big horns in his field as you passed it. Whether it was a perfect day or one of the worst, he was always there, watching attentively with his kind eyes. You could always feel his presence and his energy, even from across the property. He was the type of friend you could count on no matter what the situation or circumstances were. He would be there, with his huge heart open, ready to listen.
A couple of days ago, Fergus was showing us very clearly that he didn’t feel well. He was kicking at his belly and refusing to eat. We had our local vet look at him, and we later rushed him to the hospital after a preliminary exam. He was taken into surgery as they struggled to diagnose him. In surgery, an impaction in his bowel was found, and part of his bowel had already began to die. There was nothing they could do to repair his bowel and save his life. We were devastatingly forced to let him go peacefully. We all felt the moment he left this world; his trustworthy presence and sweet soul crossing over. (Continued in comments)
