How can you put an individual, a friend, a great love that transcended everything into words? How can you summarize a life so full of love, joy, and purpose? Maybe the truth is that you simply cannot. Some legacies are too profound for language alone. They live on not in what we say, but in the lives they touched and the memories they leave behind. This is one of those legacies. The memory of the most extraordinary turkey who ever lived will endure forever.
Our superhero peacefully left his earthly body in the early morning hours of July 29. He did so on his own terms, in his own bed, and in his own time. He was ready to rest. Those of us who loved him were not ready to let him go, and we never really will be. And yet, even in his painful absence, his love and wisdom continue to surround us.
I remember the first time I laid eyes on Schmidt so clearly. My heart stopped when I saw him. He was a rescue who shattered my heart, but it was Schmidt’s own spirit and hope that put the pieces back together. From the day we met, I vowed to love him, care for him, and fight alongside him no matter what happened. And I did. I fought for him every single day. We all did. Schmidt came to us after enduring a life no living being should ever have to experience. He was in pain, afraid, and in desperate need of help. But Schmidt had something that could never be taken away from him: he had a fighting spirit that refused to give up. From that very first moment, Schmidt showed us that his story was not defined by what had happened to him. It was defined by his courage, his trust, and his incredible will to live. He was not simply a rescue who needed saving. In so many ways, he saved us as much as we saved him. He was a teacher, a family member, and a source of endless motivation. He had a way of making people believe in the impossible. He showed gratitude in ways that words could never capture, and he gave back far more love than anyone could have imagined.
