CCE Marine staff members Mike Sautkulis and Nick Martino have been busy wrapping up water quality monitoring season this fall! This past week we concluded our 10th year of water quality monitoring in the Huntington-Northport Bay Complex as part of the Long Island Sound Unified Water Study Volunteer Monitoring Program! This study is part of a regional effort led by Save the Sound and the EPA's Long island Sound Partnership to monitor water quality of Long Island Sound embayments. We measure the following parameters: temperature, salinity, turbidity, dissolved oxygen, chlorophyll-a, qualitative and quantitative macrophytes, ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, total dissolved nitrogen, and orthophosphate. Additionally, 6 loggers have been placed in the complex to monitor continuous dissolved oxygen, salinity and temperature.

Look at this beauty! This juvenile female seahorse was found during our seahorse seining stewardship session at the Ponquogue Bridge today. CCE educator and expert in all things seahorses, Kim Manzo, led a group at low tide to sein and talk about the life cycles + behaviors of these fascinating creatures. If you would like to try and find one in the eelgrass with us, there is one more public seining scheduled for August 25. Sign up through our Eventbrite link - spots are limited! Link below.

Back to the Bays first Stewardship Session was held at our new facility we're operating in partnership with the Village of Sag Harbor. Participants learned about the work we are doing there and about spat-on-shell oysters and reef restoration. This process begins by collecting oyster shells from local restaurants and raw bars to be used for new oyster reefs. Shells are dried in the sun (curing) before they are bagged. Once bagged they are placed in tanks with baby oysters (spat) that will set on the old shells and will grow to make new oyster reefs. One adult oyster filters 50 gallons of water in one day improving the overall health of the estuary. We welcomed Assemblymember Tommy John Schiavoni who stopped by to partake in the activities. This work is being funded by Southampton Town through our Community Preservation Fund Water Quality Improvement grant, and through the support of our generous private donors.

These 22 day-old clams are crawling around with their foot and draw in water and plankton with their siphon. The shell is still thin enough to see inside them - the darker area is algae accumulated in the stomach. - Mike Patricio, CCE Marine Hatchery Manager. Cornell Cooperative Extension of Suffolk County
