A little late, but a special thanks to Stephen Skrenta from for being our guest speaker at the April meeting! It was a fascinating meeting, and very informative!

To recap:
☆ Acabonac is an Algonquin word that means "where roots are grown"
☆ Eastern li was once known for fertile land where cattle were brought by rail car for finish- eating a diet of high energy grass food to layer fat- whereas post-WW2 cattle in America were fattened in feed lots with mostly grains
☆ Acabonac Farms has grassfeed cattle, lamb, pastured chicken, & pork and is the largest farm in Middle Island
☆ Cattle move around to their different farms for more grass
☆ They sell over 90% of what they raise over the internet- directly to customers homes- capture all retail margins
☆ 10% of their business is to restaurants- mostly ground beef
☆ They started the ranch in 2015- regenerative- no pesticides or herbicides- no plowing or tilling- permanent pasture- no driving tractor on pasture- no synthetic or organic fertilizers- rotate the animals and deposit fertility through manure- no need for those chemicals and fertilizers
☆ They believe we are what we eat- what their cattle eat matters to their health- healthy biological activity grows healthier pasture, healthier cattle, better for humans - soil health matters!
☆ Stephen learned from research from other countries from Ireland, Australia, South Africa, and New Zealand in regard to pasture-based livestock

Thank you again!!

Last night at our March meeting, Peter Haskell of in Westhampton Beach joined us for a very informative lecture on local seafood and how they pride themselves on provising the highest quality products. Peter is incredibly passionate about what he does, and that is evident in both a quick conversation with him and by tasting his products! 🐟 Thank you again for being our guest of honor!

Haskell began his entrepreneurial career in business and seafood as a 14 year old clammer. Now he operates Haskell's Seafood Market & Cafe, in addition to selling seafood to restaurants near and far.

He spoke about how seafood not caught locally often travels through at least 16 sets of hands before it ends up on your plate... one of the MANY reasons to purchase local seafood. Haskell has about 100 local fishermen who provide him with product year round. Our waters have some of the strictest regulations, which drive what fish/shellfish are in season.

For example, Haskell helped put LOCAL Royal Red Shrimp 🍤 on the map. These shrimp live in deep cold waters, about 50-90 miles off shore. They have a slightly higher fat content, very tender meat, and a delightful sweetness to them. Royal red shrimp are flash frozen once brought to shore to ensure freshness and quality. Sizes range from U12- U25 with various options available (peeled & devices, head-on, 12ct or 2 # bags). We were lucky enough to try the royal red shrimp last night in a lightly dressed salad Peter put together- so incredibly delicious! We were all blown away with the flavors and tenderness!

Haskell's Seafood products are also now available in 2 local Shop Rite stores- Bay Shore & Massapequa! If you can't make it out to Westhampton Beach, make sure you check out their refrigerator at those 2 other stores! They carry all different items, including a selection of fresh stocks, seafood salads, soups, etc.

We also want to thank Chef Jerry from for hosting the meeting and providing us with an awesome location for our meeting and some delicious food too!

This past Monday, we had our November meeting at Pride Enjoy Bakery in Wading River. is an alternative bakery that specializes in gluten-free, vegan, and allergy-friendly sweet treats 🍰

Pride Enjoy was started by alum Janel Ordemann and began operating out of the Stonybrook Calverton Food Business Incubator. After growing her business, she opened her first brick-and-mortar in Wading River and has slowly expanded over the last four years into the beautiful space she has now.

Janel prides herself on creating delicious gluten-free and vegan baked goods that do not compromise on taste, texture, or flavor. She has worked very hard behind the scenes testing recipes, various types of flours, and other ingredients to produce outrageously delicious treats. You would truly never know these goodies don't contain butter or dairy- just wow!

Janel gave us a tour of the bakery and talked about the various workstations set up around the kitchen. She gave us some insight into what has helped her find quality employees and what she's changed over the years to make her business better. We got to taste test a lot of her most popular items and ask her about how they're made. We truly learned so much from her!

If you're ever in the Wading River area or in need of gluten-free/vegan baked goods, make sure you stop by Pride Enjoy to pick up some delicious goodies!

A special thank you to Janel for hosting us 🤗🍩🍪

P.S: Pride Enjoy is selling pies 🥧 for Thanksgiving! If you need a gluten-free, vegan pie- make sure you place your order ASAP!
