Steam Up LIRR 39

Steam Up LIRR 39 We need your help, please donate TODAY! THANK YOU Long Island Railroad #39 is a G5s class steam locomotive with a 4-6-0 wheel arrangement.

Long Island Railroad #39 is one of three remaining 4-6-0 G5s locomotives left in the world. #39 was built in June of 1929 by the Pennsylvania Railroad in Altoona Pennsylvania. She was one of 31 G5s locomotives built in the Pennsylvania Railroad's Juniata shops for Long Island commuter service. The G5s class locomotive was originally designed by the Pennsylvania Railroad for the rigorous job of com

muter service. Commuter service requires locomotives that can start and stop trains often. The G5s is designed to rapidly accelerate a train of ten or more passenger coaches to over 70 mph, then, after running several miles, bring the train to a stop at the next station. This must be done over and over again, and G5s handled this task well. This locomotive class first entered commuter service for the Pennsylvania Railroad on branchlines around Pittsburgh, PA in 1923. At this time the Long Island Railroad, the largest commuter railroad in the country, was a Pennsylvania Railroad subsidiary. The Long Island was undergoing a modernization that would make it the first US operator of an all steel passenger car fleet by 1927. This growth meant heavier trains. The G5s was a perfect fit for the Long Island's needs. In January, 1924, the Pennsylvania Railroad built four class G5s locomotives, #20 - #23, for the Long Island Railroad. In January, 1925, five more were built, #24 through #28. #29 though #38 were delivered in 1928 and #39 through #50 arrived in 1929. These Ten-Wheelers provided the bulk of Long Island's motive power until dieselization in 1955. Our G5s, #39, primarily served the Oyster Bay branch in Nassau County. She was the last steam engine to travel to Greenport in June, 1955, and was one of two steam engines to participate in the official "end of steam" ceremonies on October 8, 1955. Also participating in this ceremony were two Alco RS-3 diesel locomotives. One of these diesels was RS-3 #1556, also in the Railroad Museum of Long Island's collection!

🚂I’ve Been Working At RMLI!🎶

We are THRILLED to show off a video that was put together of our dedicated volunteers IN ACTION, working on Long Island Rail Road #39! 100% of it’s contents is entirely recorded by us (and entirely free of AI) including the EXCELLENT musical performance by Steven Sanflippo and Joe Costa (be sure to come back in the near future to see the actual live performance that was recorded as well, as the raw footage was too good to only use audibly)! Please take the time to watch and enjoy the video; including some words at the end from RMLI Social Media Coordinator: Noah Heilman.

We ask that you would consider making a TAX-DEDUCTIBLE donation today, to show your support for our committed volunteers and our goal of seeing LIRR #39 IN STEAM! We truly cannot do this without your help, though we continue to strive daily to see her completed!

We truly cannot thank our volunteers enough, for the work they put in to preserving this HISTORIC locomotive, but also for their invaluable service to the Railroad Museum of Long Island! Every one of us (all the way up to RMLI President: Don Fisher) are 100% volunteers, that do what we do to preserve our important railroad heritage; for future generations to come and enjoy! We also could not be where we are as an organization, and with our Steam Up LIRR #39 Project WITHOUT YOU; so thank you to all those who support us and our vision! We truly appreciate everyone who helped us get to where we are now, and those who continue to help see us progress towards an OPERATION LIRR #39; and a museum that continues to preserve our shared history!

🚂CONGRATULATIONS MATIAS!🎉

Last weekend we were VERY HONORED to present Matias (and his family), his GRAND PRIZE of a FULL SET OF LIRR #39 StayBolt Caps IN PERSON (at the Railroad Museum of Long Island, in Riverhead NY)! He spent his VERY OWN tooth fairy money on 4 tickets to our fundraising raffle, and was the LUCKY WINNER! We were very encouraged by his generosity, and his excitement to accept his Staybolt Caps (with him planning to show them off soon at school; HOW’S THAT FOR A SHOW AND TELL!)

Its little moments like these that remind us of the reason we truly do what we do (as the Railroad Museum of Long Island); getting kids excited about railroad preservation, and building memories that they will have for a lifetime! We are certain that Matias will cherish these pieces of Long Island Rail Road #39, and will be even more excited to see her IN STEAM! We honestly do it all for the kids, as without them… railroad preservation as we know it… dies with our current generation. So take the time TODAY to show your children and grand children your layout, bring them to a museum, or take them on a train ride… as it’s for their future we work to preserve the past!

We hope you have been encouraged by this gesture of good will by one of our youngest railroaders, and take the opportunity to follow his example; and support this IMPORTANT restoration today! Matias (as well as ALL of you) deserve to see an OPERATIONAL #39, for ourselves and our children!

🚂PROGRESS MADE!!!📈

We are very thankful to Transcontinental Railfan for sharing our most recent fundraising update of $342,885, in THIS WEEK’s Railfan Updates And Announcements! We truly appreciate his assistance in this restoration, and for his dedication to railroad preservation!

We ALSO had a FANTASTIC WEEKEND in Riverhead with our MUSEUM FLEA MARKET, and Steam Up LIRR #39 Table. The weather on Saturday may have been a bit chilly, and damp; but we braved the weather. Overall it was a very productive weekend for the project, with many donations being made to the campaign from our thoughtful visitors! We truly enjoyed educating the public on the significance of LIRR #39, her history, and the IMPORTANCE of this restoration. Thank you to everyone who continues to support our MISSION to bring this HISTORIC LOCOMOTIVE back into STEAM, for the first time since her retirement in 1955!

💥A BIG Weekend For LIRR #39!💥

We are PROUD to report on a VERY SUCCESSFUL weekend for the Railroad Museum of Long Island, and the Steam Up LIRR #39 Project!

🚂 Firstly we had a GREAT WEEKEND attending the annual meeting of the Pennsylvania Railroad Technical & Historical Society (alongside our friends in the Long Island Chapter), and are grateful for their support of our restoration of Pennsy Built G5s: LIRR #39! The meeting was a FANTASTIC OPPORTUNITY to meet many like minded individuals who share our love of PRR STEAM, and technical innovation! Everyone was very interested to hear about our recent progress towards our contract with the Strasburg Rail Road, and see our NEW PAINTED KEYSTONE (with the unpainted sand cast bronze plate being prominently displayed last year)! We are VERY thankful to everyone who stopped by to converse, and contribute towards our MISSION TO PRESERVE PENNSYLVANIA RAILROAD HISTORY IN MOTION! We look very much forward to returning again in the future, and strongly suggest YOU join the PRRT&HS national organization.

Organization Information Found Below:
https://www.prrths.org/

📚 On top of running our RMLI museum site in Riverhead, we had a group of dedicated volunteers set up an informative outreach table at the Middle Country Library, in Centereach, NY. There volunteers displayed a small taste of the MANY model trains we have in our Lionel Visitor Center; and gave out information regarding the restoration of LIRR #39!

⭐️ If you missed out on seeing us at either of these events, and you want to be a part of HISTORY, please consider supporting the project today! All donations of ANY SIZE, go a long way towards bringing Long Island Rail Road #39 BACK INTO STEAM; to be cherished for GENERATIONS!
