Washington Montessori Institute

Washington Montessori Institute AMI Montessori Teacher Training in the Washington, DC area and beyond.

The Montessori approach to education was developed by Maria Montessori, a visionary Italian anthropologist and physician. Begun in 1907 with a small group of children in Rome, Montessori education is now implemented on six continents and has proven effective across cultural boundaries and socio-economic levels. In North America alone, there are approximately 5,000 private Montessori schools and 20

0 public schools offering a Montessori approach. The growth of Montessori education has created a demand for highly qualified Montessori teachers. If you seek a viable, proven teaching alternative in education, WMI offers the highest quality Association Montessori Internationale (AMI) teacher training course, yielding a diploma that is recognized worldwide. Montessori trains teachers to recognize the natural development of each child and to respect that individuality while guiding student learning. In recent decades, Montessori education has seen enormous growth around the world and in the United States. As interest in Montessori education continues to increase, so too does the demand for qualified teachers. In today's educational climate, an advanced degree enhances opportunities for professional advancement and leadership. WMI offers Primary (ages 3-6), Assistants to Infancy (ages birth to 3), and Elementary (ages 6-12) training. Please visit our website for more information on the application process and different degree options. “It follows that at the beginning of his life the individual can accomplish wonders – without effort and quite unconsciously.” — Maria Montessori

The first three years of life are a remarkable period of human development. During this time, children are not simply learning skills; they are constructing themselves. Language, movement, independence, relationships, and a sense of belonging are all taking shape through everyday experiences.

Maria Montessori observed that young children possess an extraordinary capacity to absorb and adapt to their environment. Understanding this unique period can transform the way we support and interact with the youngest members of our communities.

Still reeling from an amazing time at the 30th International Montessori Congress 2026!

It was a powerful reminder that Montessori is so much more than an approach or philosophy; it truly is a global community with a collective commitment to supporting every child’s development.

We were grateful to meet many new friends and reconnect with familiar faces to share ideas, exchange experiences, and reflect on our work with children.

These were important moments that we hope will energize us as we continue to prepare to bring AMI Montessori training to the people and communities who need it.

Looking forward to the next Congress and AMI's 100th anniversary celebration in Amsterdam in 2029!

Thank you, AMI and Montessori México!

How do Montessori math materials help children learn numbers?

AMI 3-6 Trainer Naoko Ogawa gives a brief glimpse into how the Golden Beads help young children learn numbers in a concrete way, where units are physical quantities that children can see, touch, and understand.

Through AMI Montessori teacher training, adults learn to present these materials with precision, purpose, and a deep understanding of child development, helping children make sense of math in a meaningful way.

Train with Naoko on the next AMI 3-6 Blended Diploma Course that starts in September at WMI!
