🇳🇬 Happy Nigeria Independence Day!

Today, CMG Global Foundation joins Nigerians at home and across the diaspora in celebrating 66 years of independence, resilience, unity and progress.

Nigeria is also deeply connected to the story of CMG Global Foundation.

Our four Nigerian-American Co-Founders — Dr. Orjioke, Dr. Oladele, Dr. Makanjuola and Dr. Okeh — began their journeys in Nigeria before building careers in medicine in the United States. Their shared commitment to giving back and expanding access to healthcare helped inspire the creation of CMG Global Foundation.

Today, that commitment continues through our work to strengthen healthcare capacity, expand access, develop sustainable partnerships, and connect resources and expertise between the United States and Nigeria.

As we celebrate Nigeria today, we also celebrate the power of the diaspora to return, reinvest, partner and build.

As National Sickle Cell Awareness Month comes to a close, our message remains:

Sickle Cell Matters. Awareness. Access. Action.

This month, CMG Global Foundation raised awareness, shared education, showed up alongside the Sickle Cell community, highlighted the power of partnership, and elevated TCD screening and childhood stroke prevention.
But September was never the finish line.

Our work continues to expand:
🧠 Stroke-prevention capacity
🩺 Access to TCD screening
👩🏾‍⚕️ A trained healthcare workforce
🤝 U.S.–Nigeria partnerships
🌍 Sustainable Sickle Cell care

This is bigger than a machine. Lasting impact requires equipment + trained people + access + education + strong partnerships.

❤️🧠 PARTNERSHIP IN ACTION | A Commitment That Continues

Yesterday, we shared why CMG Global Foundation believes partnerships are essential in the fight against Sickle Cell Disease.

Today, we’re looking back at one example of what partnership can make possible.

In April 2024, CMG Global Foundation donated a Transcranial Doppler (TCD) machine to Sickle Cell Foundation Nigeria for its Stroke Prevention Programme at the National Sickle Cell Centre in Lagos. The official handover took place on April 22, 2024. Sickle Cell Foundation Nigeria

Why does that matter?

Children living with Sickle Cell Disease can face an increased risk of stroke. TCD screening provides a non-invasive way to identify children at increased risk so appropriate preventive care can be considered.

And this isn’t a stand-alone service at SCFN.

For us, the lesson remains clear:

That’s why our work did not end with the first TCD machine.

❤️ ACCESS TO CARE MATTERS | Sickle Cell + Health Equity

Sickle Cell Disease may be genetic. Inequitable access to care isn’t.

People living with Sickle Cell Disease deserve access to high-quality, comprehensive care—regardless of where they live. Yet families can face barriers to specialized providers, routine and TCD screening, pain management, treatment, psychosocial support, education, and continuity of care.

That’s why health equity is central to CMG Global Foundation’s Sickle Cell Initiative.

Through our work in Georgia and Nigeria, we are collaborating with partners to expand access to screening, strengthen healthcare workforce capacity, increase education and awareness, and build more sustainable systems of Sickle Cell care.

🧠 KNOW SICKLE CELL | Why Stroke Prevention Matters

Sickle Cell Disease can affect more than the blood—it can affect the brain, too.

Children living with SCD face an increased risk of stroke. Transcranial Doppler (TCD) screening is a non-invasive ultrasound that helps identify children who may be at increased risk, allowing healthcare providers to intervene before a first stroke occurs.

But screening only works when children can access it.

That’s why CMG Global Foundation’s Stop the Stroke Before It Starts campaign is working to expand TCD equipment, screening access, workforce training, and sustainable stroke-prevention capacity, with a focus on communities in Georgia and Nigeria.

What is Sickle Cell Disease—and why does understanding it matter?

Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) is an inherited blood disorder that affects hemoglobin and red blood cells. It can cause serious health complications, including severe pain episodes, acute chest syndrome, infections, organ damage, and stroke.

One important fact everyone should know: Sickle Cell Disease is inherited. It is not contagious.

Education helps fight misinformation and stigma while encouraging greater awareness, earlier care, and stronger support for Sickle Cell Warriors and their families.

Today, CMG Global Foundation was proud to join our friends and partners at the Sickle Cell Foundation of Georgia (SCFG) for the 46th Annual Sickle Cell Road Race/Walk!

We walked for a great cause, connected with our community, and stood alongside Sickle Cell Warriors, families, advocates, healthcare professionals, volunteers, and supporters who continue to show up for Sickle Cell Disease.

👏🏾 Congratulations to SickleCellFoundationofGA on another successful event! More than 700 people registered, with hundreds coming together today to walk, run, connect, and raise awareness for Sickle Cell Disease.

A special thank you to SCFG CEO Dr. Tabatha McGee for spending time with us and sharing some of the history behind this longstanding community tradition.

As we continue National Sickle Cell Awareness Month, we’re reminded that awareness is also about showing up, building relationships, and supporting the organizations and communities doing this work every day.
