Longtime Chicago residents are getting pushed out of their homes because the Obama Presidential Center is driving up rents in their neighborhood.

Tenants at the Chaney Braggs Apartments in Woodlawn just unionized to fight back after a California investor tried to buy their building to either renovate or demolish it. They've been offered $2,000 per household to leave.

Many pay between $700 and $800 a month in rent and have lived there for 30 or 40 years. They can't afford to relocate in a neighborhood that's rapidly changing because of the center's construction. Residents fear rents could double to around $1,400 a month and higher, pricing them out completely.

The building used to be owned by a nonprofit committed to affordable housing, but those protections are gone. Now residents say they're stuck dealing with gentrification driven by a project Obama called a "gift" to Chicago. Taxpayers are absorbing hundreds of millions in infrastructure costs tied to it.
