From sculptor Mikael F. Sogoian: "Regarding something important! Today is one of those days that I always remember with sadness and deep gratitude. On November 3rd, my teacher and mentor from my years in the United States was born. He was a truly great man, a creator, and a philosopher of the chisel. We worked together for only 3 years. He passed away in 1999, but the legacy he left behind is a world heritage of high art. Thank you, my friend and teacher, for being in my life. Frederick Hart (1943-1999)."

On June 27, 1905, Ruby Middleton Forsythe was born in Charleston, South Carolina. In 1921, she earned her education certificate from the Avery Institute, and then went on to earn a BS degree from South Carolina State College.

In 1938, she and her husband moved to Pawley's Island, South Carolina, where she began teaching in a one-room school, the only educational facility open to African-American children at the time. Over six decades, and much of the Jim Crow era, “Miss Ruby” — as she was affectionately known to her students — taught generation after generation of local boys and girls.

Not far away, Hart grew up at his mother's family home in Conway, South Carolina. Shortly after hearing of her death in 1992, he created and donated a bas-relief portrait of Miss Ruby, a memorial tribute in honor the impact she had on so many young people’s lives as an educator.
