June 21st is World Music Day, a celebration of the diverse cultures, histories, and traditions that music helps preserve and share across generations.

For centuries, music has been at the heart of Greek life, telling stories of love, migration, resistance, faith, and community. From the folk songs of the islands and villages, to the rich traditions of rebetiko and regional music, Greek melodies offer a unique window into the country’s cultural heritage.

To celebrate World Music Day, we’ve selected a collection of books exploring the history, traditions, and songs of Greece. Whether you’re a musician, researcher, educator, or simply a lover of Greek culture, these titles provide a deeper appreciation of the music that has shaped generations.

May 19th marks Pontic Greek Genocide Remembrance Day, a day to honor the hundreds of thousands of Pontic Greeks who were persecuted, displaced, and killed during the final years of the Ottoman Empire. Remembering these events is not only about honoring those who were lost, but also about preserving the stories, culture, and history of a people whose communities thrived for centuries along the Black Sea before being forced from their homeland.

Through works such as Μικρή Ιστορία της Μικρασιατικής Καταστροφής by Thanos M. Veremis, Ionian Vision, and Πόντος: Μια Ιστορία Από τον Μικρασιατικό Βορρά by Vlasis Agtzidis, we continue to learn, remember, and ensure that future generations carry these histories forward. May their memory be eternal.

This year marks the 130th anniversary of the modern Olympic Games, first revived in 1896 in Athens, reconnecting the modern world with an ancient Greek tradition that dates back over two thousand years.
The original Olympic Games, held in Olympia, were more than athletic competitions, they were a celebration of unity, excellence, and cultural identity. Their revival in Greece symbolized not only a return to these values, but also a global recognition of Greece’s lasting influence on sport, culture, and international connection.

Over time, the Games have continued to evolve, expanding to include athletes from around the world and creating space for greater inclusion, including the growing role of women in competition.

📚 To explore this legacy further, we’re featuring a selection of books that trace the history and impact of the Olympic Games:
1. The Ancient Olympics: A History by Nigel Spivey
2. The Women’s Olympics and the Great Goddess by Harita Meenee
3. Olympia and Olympic Games by Anna Maranti
4. First Olympic Games by Jean Richards

From ancient tradition to modern global event, the Olympic Games remain a powerful reminder of how Greek history continues to shape the world today.

When we think of Greek Independence, we often think of battles and heroes. But independence was also preserved in quieter, lasting ways.

Women played a vital role in maintaining Greek identity, not only through acts of resistance, but through storytelling, language, and daily life. They passed down traditions, taught the language, and kept cultural memory alive within families and communities.

In many ways, this form of preservation was just as powerful. It ensured that even in times of uncertainty, Greek culture, values, and identity would continue.

This Women’s History Month, we honor not only those remembered in history books, but also the generations of women whose voices, stories, and traditions helped carry Greek identity forward.

📚 Works like Με την Πένα Σπαθί (With the Pen as a Sword) bring these voices back into focus, featuring poems, plays, personal accounts, and writings that capture women’s experiences during the Revolution. From those who fought, to those who supported, to those who wrote and remembered, these texts reveal forms of heroism that history has often overlooked.
