Tuesday Club

Tuesday Club Tuesday Club is the oldest organization in River Falls, WI. Luncheons are the third Tuesday of each month. John Q.

Tuesday Club is a local organization founded in 1890 by Mrs. Emery (Marie Theresa), wife of the president of the River Falls Normal School. (now UW-RF) The group was originally formed to provide an opportunity for “the study of history, literature and art.” In 1906, the following was added to the club objective: “…and the promotion of any cause which the Club shall deem wise and good.” Tuesday

Club has been a long-time supporter of the Public Library and in recent years, has spread its support to Turningpoint for Victims of Domestic Abuse shelter and a scholarship for a female non-traditional student at UW-RF. While the Tuesday Club members do some fundraising each year in order to support these causes, the focus remains on providing an educational, inspirational or entertaining program each month, and of course, eating!

Some other quick items that came up at our May meeting that will also be noted in the fall!

We will encourage you to be at Juniors at 11:30 so we can make sure we all get through the line in time for the speaker to start. We often have our other meeting agenda items after that. We also will have two lines on each side of the serving tables.

Our lunch will continue to be $22 which includes the meal, coffee, soda, or water, taxes, tip and donation to our philanthropy efforts.

Because of the need to have an accurate headcount for meals, if there is no RSVP that you will be coming to the meeting, made to your contact person, you will pay $10 for the speaker and can order/pay for a meal off the menu. We also encourage you to become a member after a visit to our meeting, as that is often where money for the speaker and so many other costs come from.

We have several new people who are taking over the officer positions for next year! Thank you for all of you that volunteered! It’s a very worthwhile women’s club that has been following in its history for more than 100 years! We do some really great things with with the funds that we raise, including money towards the RF Library, Turningpoint Domestic Abuse shelter, and a scholarship for a non-traditional UWRF Student. Plus every month we have a speaker, usually with a connection to the community. And a wonderful lunch prepared by Juniors.

Thank you for wearing your hats! A big thank you to Sal, Judy S and Sal’s sister, for the cute hat pins that were at our table spots!

Our speaker for the 2026 May meeting was David C. Zlesak, Ph.D.,
Professor of Horticulture, of the
UWRF Plant and Earth Science Department.

He gave a very funny and entertaining presentation on the cultivation of the native Ninebark, which he has been working on over the last several decades. It was exciting to hear how he developed his plant -the Ninebark Little Devil. Just like a proud father, he explained different plants that he crossed in order to get this hybrid in 2011. There are many other ninebarks that are different colors, heights, have different resistance to disease, and the choice for names!

David was so thoughtful to bring two plants to give away to two Tuesday Club members. And made the very generous choice to donate his gratuity for speaking, back to Tuesday Club. Thank you so very much for your generosity!

Please check out the ninebark varieties at Baileys’ Greenhouse and some other garden stores! Once you see the different versions, you may also see them out in our community like at Culver’s! They are drought tolerant and no, does not peel nine times although it does peel!

David has had several of his hybrids of the Ninebark, roses, and hydrangeas win awards for Plant of the Year! When you listen to his passionate and entertaining explanations of how they came about, you can understand why!
What a compliment to our community he is and an asset to the UWRF college community as well!

The idea for paying tribute to our founding members by wearing hats and/or gloves to our May meeting was started last year or the year before.

Our members wore some great hats last year, so don’t forget your hat/gloves tomorrow! We’d love to get some pictures of you!

A bit belated due to my missing the April meeting! But here is a brief summary for the rest of you who may have missed it as well!

Amy Peterson, Community Development Director, provided the history of the Kinni Corridor Plan, which set in motion the project to remove both hydroelectric dams in the City and restore the Kinnickinnic River to its free flowing state. She covered the history of the dams, the planning process, key decision points and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and National Park Service as partners in project process. Many pieces are in play on this project, from the multiple federal, state and local partners to the efforts to secure funding for the $20M+ project. We learned more about planning and design advances for both the river restoration and the recreation amenities planned for this beautiful corridor in River Falls.

Thank you so much, Amy, for providing this information for us! Any added information always makes us better informed citizens!

Tuesday Club will meet April 21st, 2026. This month our speaker will be Amy Peterson informing us about the Dam Removal Project.

Our April meeting will begin our kick off for our annual Bakeless Bake Sale.

For those of you new to Tuesday Club, this is your opportunity to contribute financially without having to bake.
As you consider the cost of baking, you might contribute what the cost would have been without all the work = Bakeless Bake Sale!
We will begin our Bakeless Bake Sale in April and continue through our May meeting.

Try to arrive a little before noon so that you can go through the buffet before our speaker and short meeting begin. Our meetings are held at Juniors Restaurant in the Legacy Ballroom, 414 South Main Street in River Falls. The cost is $22 for the meal including coffee, tea, soda, tax, gratuity and a contribution to our philanthropy. Annual dues remain at $30.

Please RSVP Yes or NO by Friday, April 17th to your email. Also include any guests.
We need to have accurate numbers for Juniors - so reply needed by Friday noon please.

Hope to see everyone on the 21st!

What a festive St. Patrick’s Day ☘️luncheon! Green napkins, and corned beef and vegetables with cabbage to eat! Thank you to Juniors Restaurant!

Our speaker was very insightful in letting us know some of the stories and some of the difficulties that people seeking asylum in our country/community face, even with having the documents necessary. Difficulties like instead of going to citizenship test appointments in the cities, they have to go to Chicago, which on limited funds is difficult. Some ID’s that are done on people are through their irises because fingerprints can change. Physicals cannot be done at our clinic but have to be court appointed doctors. Nothing is made easy for them!
There are people and programs to help. Usually these can be identified through the churches. Helping to fund this is appreciated.

Next month is our annual bake-less bake sale. This is where you donate money that you might’ve used to make something to donate to raise money but no cooking is necessary! I will have a post on that in the near future closer to our next luncheon date. Money can always be sent into Tuesday Club to our treasurer ahead of time. 💵💵

Just a heads up that in May, we will also be wearing hats as we did the last couple of years. So go ahead and find your fancy hat that is the most fun to wear! 👒👒👒

I know that someone out there is dreaming of a higher office dream job and we are looking for somebody to work with somebody else as vice president! Let us know if you’re interested for next year! 🙋🏼‍♀️

☘️ Happy St Patrick’s Day! ☘️

Our next Tuesday Club meeting will be Tuesday, March 17th at Juniors Restaurant in our separate room. Our speaker this month will be Bobby Kuhn. Her topic will be Asylum Seekers.

Try to arrive a little before noon so that you can get through the buffet before our speaker and short meeting begin.
Cost is $22 for the meal including coffee, soda, tax and gratuity plus a contribution to our philanthropy.

Please RSVP YES or NO by noon on Friday March 13th TO YOUR CONTACT PERSON. If you do not have one, please reply here by Friday Mar 13th as well If you are bringing a guest be sure to let us know so that they can be included in our lunch count.

IMPORTANT: Regardless of how you reply now, PLEASE let us know if your situation changes during the week.

It is VERY IMPORTANT that we have an accurate count for Juniors.
We had seven people who came to the February meeting but had not responded to their caller. We really want you to come and feel welcome! However, this has happened before and the food ran out before the last couple of people could eat; sending Jeff back to the kitchen to come up with something.

The reverse is also true: some who say yes, don’t show up & we still have to pay for the # of meals we ordered! From what I was told, you are still expected to pay for the missed meal when you come the next time or mail it in.

This is also an important reason to become a member, so you have a contact person and help support our Tuesday Club in many different ways. Missed meals probably need to be taken out of our money that we use for other more important things and our dues are not that expensive!

Thanks to everyone for helping with this issue. 👍👍

Dr. Chris Tashjin presented an informational session on the Free Clinic. The Clinic is for all of Western Wisconsin…….Baldwin, Ellsworth, Hudson, River Falls in the counties of Pierce and St. Croix. Doctors come from RF and neighboring communities….all donating their time. The group has 150 volunteer members, plus three paid members.

Patients are seen on Tuesday evening in River Falls. They cannot have any kind of medical insurance, Medicare or Medicaid. Most patients either have high blood pressure or diabetes.

The Free Clinic receives no government monies, they rely on grants, service clubs, businesses, individuals and fund raisers. Forestville Winery Bingo night gives all proceeds to the clinic. ( I’ve been meaning to go play there. Maybe this summer!) The West Wind’s Christmas morning free will breakfast generated 10k-12k this past year!
