This may look like early Christmas decoration, but it's a natural, right-on-time October development.
In early summer, gall wasps lay eggs in the veins on the undersides of leaves of oak trees. Over the summer, spherical galls develop. On some oak species, the galls are smooth, others knobby like these.
In fall, leaves fall from the trees with the pupae that become female wasps who start a new life cycle.
I found a bunch of these red galls on a woods walk this week and felt like nature had decorated for Christmas.
