Today we remember this iconic image from 23 FEB 1945.

U.S. Marines from the 3rd Platoon, E Company, 2nd Battalion, 28th Regiment of the 5th Division took the crest of Mount Suribachi, Japan's highest peak and most strategic position, and raised the U.S. flag.

Marine photographer Louis Lowery was with them and recorded the event.

Several hours later more Marines headed up to the crest with a larger flag. Joe Rosenthal, a photographer with the Associated Press, met them along the way and recorded the raising of the second flag along with a Marine still photographer and a motion-picture cameraman.

Rosenthal took three photographs atop Suribachi. The first, which showed five Marines and one Navy corpsman struggling to hoist the heavy flag pole, which became the most reproduced photograph in history and won him a Pulitzer Prize.

Downtown by the river.

We have such a charming location here along the Ohio River, nestled so perfectly within a valley of the southern region of Appalachian Ohio, giving us the pleasure of witnessing so many tranquil sunsets throughout the year. With such rich history we all take great pride in our little village and we can all agree, it is quite the view.

A little touch on local history we all should be familiar with.

John Rankin was a prominent member of the Underground Railroad network that assisted fugitives from slavery in the years before the American Civil War. His home stood on a three hundred-foot high hill that overlooked the Ohio River. Rankin would signal fugitive slaves in Kentucky with a lantern, letting them know when it was safe for them to cross the river. He kept the runaways hidden until it was safe for them to travel further north. Rankin gave shelter and food to as many as two thousand runaway slaves during his career with the Underground Railroad.
