🎓 We are proud to announce that Dr. Victor Diaz, a member of Rio Rico High School’s very first graduating class, will be inducted into the SCV35 Hall of Fame this month! 🌟

At RRHS, Victor was the managing editor of the school newspaper, The Talon, and co-captain of the school’s first Cross Country team to compete at State (even though, as he fondly recalls, he was the team’s slowest runner). After graduation, he became a Regents Scholar at ASU, earning a B.A. in Broadcast Journalism with a Minor in Spanish, graduating magna cm laude, and being named ASU’s Outstanding Student Leader in 2002.

Although he went to college wanting to become a journalist, his experiences volunteering in Rio Rico's Interact Club and coaching in San Cayetano Little League and Rio Rico Youth Hoops led him to pursue opportunities to work with youth and a career in education rather than journalism. He went on to earn an M.A. in Education Equity and Social Justice from San Francisco State University as well as a Ph.D. in Education Leadership and Policy Studies from Arizona State University.

In his education career, he has taught high school and middle school, as well as undergraduate and graduate courses at Arizona State University and Grand Canyon University. He has served as a district administrator in the Isaac Elementary School District and the Phoenix Elementary School District, before working for WestEd where he currently engages in education research and consultant services with schools and communities across the country. In addition, he has served as member of the Governing Board of the Osborn School District, a board member with Los Diablos, the Hispanic alumni association of Arizona State University, and on the board of RAMMS, a youth sports league in Phoenix. Almost 30 years after graduating from Rio Rico, he continues to serve his community through education and youth sports, modeling his service and leadership after amazing mentors like Coach Fanning, Coach Schadler, and many other educators in SCV35.

Nearly 30 years after graduating from Rio Rico, his dedication to education and community remains as strong as ever. ❤️👏

✨ We are proud to announce that Rio Rico High School alumna Ariana Garcilazo will be inducted into the SCV35 Distinguished Hall of Fame this month!

Born in Nogales and raised in Rio Rico, Ariana graduated from RRHS in 2016, where she made history as the first softball player from our school to compete at the collegiate level. She went on to Arizona Christian University, earning her degree in Communications, magna cm laude, before beginning a promising career in journalism.

From her start at Azteca Tucson to her current role as a multimedia journalist at Telemundo Arizona—a top 10 media market—Ariana has shared countless stories that inform and inspire. She also hosts the bilingual segment “Qué Tal Arizona” on Telemundo’s newscast, continuing her passion for highlighting voices in the community.

As the eldest of three sisters, Ariana has always strived to be a role model, and today she inspires not only her family but also the many who follow her journey in broadcasting. We are thrilled to celebrate her achievements and welcome her into the Hall of Fame! 🌟

We are thrilled to announce that Alli Howard will be inducted into the SCV35 Hall of Fame this month! 🌟

Alli’s career began at Rio Rico High School, where she directed symphonic, jazz, and marching bands, taught music theory, percussion, and color guard, and sponsored the school’s Tri-M chapter. Under her leadership, the Rio Rico Marching Hawks proudly represented Arizona in the 2007 National Memorial Day Parade in Washington, D.C., and the Jazz Ensemble brought home the Judges Most Outstanding Award at the 2012 Highland Jazz Festival. The bands consistently earned Superior ratings at festivals, and in 2012, she was named SCV35 Teacher of the Year.

Her passion for music education took her to the University of Arizona, where she earned her Master’s in Wind Band Conducting, served as Interim Associate Director of Bands, and directed the Pride of Arizona Marching Band. For more than two decades, she has inspired young musicians as a conductor, teacher, and clinician across Arizona and Florida. Today, she continues to share her love for music as an orchestra director, adjudicator, and leader in statewide music education organizations.

Congratulations, Ms. Howard! Your talent, leadership, and dedication have left a lasting legacy in SCV35 and beyond.

Rio Rico native serves as a member of U.S. Navy’s “Silent Service”

KINGS BAY, Ga. – A Rio Rico, Arizona, native is serving aboard USS Georgia, one of the world’s most advanced nuclear-powered submarines.

Petty Officer 2nd Class Ana Mercado, a 2016 Rio Rico High School graduate, joined the Navy four years ago.

“I joined the Navy at first because I really liked the opportunities the Navy provides,” said Mercado. “Being a nuke, you can almost go directly into working at a plant in the civilian field. The longer I was here though, the more I appreciated what we do for the country and our defense. I was also interested in being one of the first few females on submarines. I wanted to make sure the future females on submarines were set to succeed.”

Today, Mercado serves as a machinist’s mate (nuclear), whose responsibilities include maintaining the nuclear plant's mechanical systems, operating and performing maintenance on them and working in the engine room.

According to Mercado, the values required to succeed in the military are similar to those found in Rio Rico.

“I'm from a mostly Hispanic community where everyone is accepting of everyone,” said Mercado. “Coming to a submarine where people are from everywhere, it is nice to be able to have good communication and be able to get along with everyone.”

Known as America’s “Silent Service,” the Navy’s submarine force operates a large fleet of technically advanced vessels. These submarines are capable of conducting rapid defensive and offensive operations around the world, in furtherance of U.S. national security.

There are three basic types of submarines: fast-attack submarines (SSN), ballistic-missile submarines (SSBN) and guided-missile submarines (SSGN).

Fast-attack submarines are designed to hunt down and destroy enemy submarines and surface ships; strike targets ashore with cruise missiles; carry and deliver Navy SEALs; conduct intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance missions; and engage in mine warfare.

The Navy's ballistic-missile submarines, often referred to as "boomers," serve as a strategic deterrent by providing an undetectable platform for submarine-launched ballistic missiles. SSBNs are designed specifically for stealth, extended patrols and the precise delivery of missiles.

Guided-missile submarines provide the Navy with unprecedented strike and special operation mission capabilities from a stealthy, clandestine platform. Each SSGN is capable of carrying 154 Tomahawk cruise missiles, plus a complement of heavyweight torpedoes to be fired through four torpedo tubes. As a member of the submarine force, Mercado is part of a rich 121-year history of the U.S. Navy’s most versatile weapons platform, capable of taking the fight to the enemy in the defense of America and its allies.

Serving in the Navy means Mercado is part of a team that is taking on new importance in America’s focus on rebuilding military readiness, strengthening alliances and reforming business practices in support of the National Defense Strategy.

“The Navy contributes to national security through deterrence and being in the water 24/7,” said Mercado.

With more than 90 percent of all trade traveling by sea, and 95 percent of the world’s international phone and internet traffic carried through underwater fiber optic, Navy officials continue to emphasize that the prosperity and security of the United States is directly linked to a strong and ready Navy. A major component of that maritime security is homeported at Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay.

“We do two big things here in King’s Bay: we send SSBNs on Strategic Deterrence Patrols and we forward deploy our guided missile submarines overseas,” said Rear Adm. John Spencer, Commander, Submarine Group Ten. “This work is essential to uphold the number one mission of the Navy: strategic deterrence. And this is the only home port for both of these types of submarines on the East Coast.”

Strategic deterrence is the Nation’s ultimate insurance program, and for decades, Kings Bay has been home to Ohio Class SSBN ballistic-missile submarines. Beginning in 2028, the new Columbia Class ballistic-missile submarines will arrive and provide continuous sea-based strategic deterrence into the 2080s.

As Mercado and other sailors continue to train and perform the missions they are tasked with, they take pride in serving their country in the United States Navy.

“It is an honor to be a part of this community and be able to defend our rights,” added Mercado.
