This is a difficult post to write, as it aims to raise awareness about the importance of spaying and neutering animals. This month alone, we have performed TNR on 13 cats, 8 of which were pregnant, resulting in the termination of their pregnancies, which is not a decision we take lightly. Clementine is a prime example of what can happen when a cat is not spayed or neutered. Poor Clementine was brought to the shelter pregnant and an X-ray revealed 3 fetuses. While the shelter searched for a foster home to allow her to have her kittens, her health began to decline. No further tests were conducted to aid her, and she was not provided with an ultrasound or any other testing. Her condition worsened, filling with fluids that leaked from her orifices, causing her significant discomfort and labored breathing. She pulled her from the shelter and taken to a clinic for spaying, hoping it would alleviate her issues. However, due to her labored breathing and poor body condition, she was deemed unsuitable for surgery. A second veterinary visit yielded the same result, leading to the decision to euthanize her. The necropsy revealed uterine torsion with rupture and necrotic fetuses, indicating she had been suffering for an extended period. She was severely toxic and ill. If she had been spayed sooner, it could have saved her life.
Rescue is not just about cute, sweet, cuddly Kittens. It’s tiring and full of hard heart breaking decisions.
If you have a pregnant cat or encounter one outdoors that you feed, please contact us, and we will try to assist. We are currently overwhelmed with TNR requests but prioritize pregnant and injured cats. It maddens me that Clementine suffered due to human negligence; she was a friendly and sweet cat that deserved better. Rest in peace sweet girl ❤️
