Not just today but every day we must remember the ultimate sacrifice that Patrolman Eugene Miglio III #435 of the Wildwood Crest Police Department made on this day in 1995. Today’s memorial was cast with beautiful skies, beautiful speeches, and even more beautiful memories of a life lost too soon. We will never forget. Ever.

Thoughts and prayers from PBA Local 59 are with the two Atlantic City Police Officers that were shot today while executing a search warrant.
We hold our loved ones tight knowing that this is the danger our brave men and women face each day.

The Township of Middle is proud to announce that Police Officers Shawn Karge and Tom Runyon have been selected as the April 2026 Employees of the Month for their outstanding service and compassion during the aftermath of the recent major snowstorm.

On February 23, 2026, following an 18-inch snowfall that left many residents without power and snowed in, Officers Runyon and Karge responded to a wellness check request for Helen M. Baker, an elderly widow. Ms. Baker had been without electricity for four days, preventing her from charging her cellphone or easily communicating. Her cousin, concerned for her well-being, reached out to the MTPD for assistance.

Officer Runyon first arrived, checked on Ms. Baker, and informed her about Middle Township’s emergency housing and available charging station. Runyon then coordinated efforts to clear her snow-covered walkway. Corporal Karge soon joined him, and together the two officers shoveled her walkway, cleared snow from her car, leveled the surrounding snow, and moved her vehicle closer to the road for easier access if needed.

In a heartfelt handwritten letter to the Township, Ms. Baker wrote: “I am writing this letter to compliment two of your police officers. After the ‘blizzard,’ I was courteously and friendly helped by Officer Runyon and Corporal Karge on Feb. 23. ... It made me feel safe and so thankful for their concern. The Township is fortunate to have both men who represent our Township. ... they made me feel good.”

Ms. Baker also noted the officers’ professionalism and kindness, emphasizing how their actions went well beyond a standard wellness check.

“These officers exemplify the dedication and community spirit we value in Middle Township,” said Mayor Chris Leusner. “Their willingness to go above and beyond, shoveling snow and ensuring an elderly resident’s safety and mobility during challenging conditions, reflects the highest standards of public service.”

The officers will be formally recognized at the Township Committee meeting on Monday, May 4, 2026. Ms. Baker has been invited to attend the ceremony.

Shawn Karge joined the MTPD as a Special Class II Officer on September 27, 2012 and was promoted to permanent Police Officer on August 18, 2014. Tom Runyon came aboard as a Special Class II Officer on May 1, 2017, and was promoted to permanent Police Officer on August 29, 2017.

The Township extends its gratitude to both officers for their exemplary service and to Ms. Baker for taking the time to share her positive experience.

Middle Township’s Employee of the Month program recognizes municipal employees who demonstrate outstanding dedication, professionalism, and service to the community. Residents and Township employees are encouraged to nominate deserving staff members for future recognition. Nominations may be submitted through the Township’s website or by contacting the Township Administration Office.

Each nomination should include the employee’s name, department, and a brief explanation of why the individual deserves to be recognized.

32 years ago today, Patrolman David Douglass was shot and killed while responding to a report of a burglar in the area of Sunnyside Avenue and Fieldview Avenue.

Patrolman Douglass was involved in a foot pursuit of the suspect, who had just set a house on fire when the man turned and shot him. Patrolman Douglass returned fire, striking the suspect in the hand. He was able to make it back to his patrol car to call for assistance but succumbed to his wounds.

The 49-year-old suspect who shot him was arrested six weeks later at his home in New York City after an extensive investigation. He pleaded guilty to murder and was sentenced to life. Unbelievably, he was granted parole in 2024 after serving the minimum amount of time.

Patrolman Douglass had served with the Lower Township Police Department for 18 years, as well as serving as a Lieutenant on the Town Bank Fire Department. He helped create the Lower Township SWAT team, he was an instructor at the Cape May County Police Academy and a past president of the Policeman's Benevolent Association.

To your Family, Friends and Co-Workers,

We will never forget...
