So…Two weeks ago I found out that apparently, last summer, a certain sweet talking longhorn, still wet behind the ears, had his way with my sweet innocent young heifer, Mirabelle, before he was scheduled to be castrated!! Three nights ago, this precious cross breed was born. It wasn’t an easy delivery, but both mother and calf are doing well.

Poor Freddie looks more like a frozen porcupine than a cow. The cows made it through their first of several single digit nights. Thanks to plenty of hay, huge mineral buckets, and warm water.

My favorite time of the evening. Peace. The cows are eating dinner and the sun is setting.

Little Elmer died in my lap last night at 8pm. He had shown so much improvement that morning but as the day went on, he became more lethargic and his breathing more labored. Literally two minutes after I arrived to feed him he started showing signs of distress. I cradled him in my arms and within minutes he was gone. There was mention that his mother had stepped on him a few times after he was born. There weren’t obvious signs of external injuries but possibly internal injuries that we couldn’t see. We threw everything at him but couldn’t save him. I am so grateful that I arrived in time to offer him some kind of comfort and to tell him how loved he was.

Poor little Elmer was born prematurely early yesterday morning. With hyperthermia, hyperglycemia, and no strength, we didn’t think he would make it through the night but thank goodness he did. He still is not strong enough to take his bottle and at the moment needs to be tubed in order to get fluids into him. He’s by no means out of the woods yet but we are hopeful. Please keep your fingers crossed and send good vibes to sweet little Elmer.
