🚴⚡ KNOW THE DIFFERENCE: E-BIKES vs. E-MOTOS ⚡🏍️

Electric rides are becoming more popular in our community, but not all “e-bikes” are actually bicycles under Colorado law. Knowing the difference helps keep everyone safe — and legal. 👇

✅ What IS an E-Bike?
Colorado recognizes 3 classes of electric bicycles:

🔹 Class 1 – Pedal assist only, up to 20 mph
🔹 Class 2 – Throttle-assisted, up to 20 mph
🔹 Class 3 – Pedal assist only, up to 28 mph and requires a speedometer

Colorado law limits e-bikes to 750 watts or less. These are generally allowed where traditional bicycles are permitted. Riders under 18 on a Class 3 e-bike must wear a helmet, and riders must be at least 16 years old to operate a Class 3. 🚴‍♂️⛑️

⚠️ What is an E-Moto?
If the vehicle exceeds the legal e-bike limits — higher speeds, larger motors, or motorcycle-style operation — it may actually be classified as an electric motorcycle or moped (“e-moto”). These vehicles may require:
🏍️ Registration
🏍️ Insurance
🏍️ A driver’s license
🏍️ Different roadway restrictions

Some e-motos may NOT be legal on bike paths, sidewalks, or trails. Modifying an e-bike to go faster can also change its legal classification. ⚡

🛑 SAFETY REMINDERS FOR ALL RIDERS:
✔️ Wear a helmet
✔️ Obey traffic laws and trail rules
✔️ Ride at safe speeds
✔️ Be alert around pedestrians and vehicles
✔️ Use lights and reflective gear at night
✔️ Parents — know what your child is riding before purchasing

Let’s work together to keep our streets, trails, and neighborhoods safe for everyone! 💙

That’s a wrap! The 2025 mountain bike season comes to a close. The Grand Hogback trails (and restrooms) will be closed to mountain bikes until April 16th, but hiking is still allowed (on dirt not mud please). Highlands trails remain open, however, mind the temporary 7th ave closure.

Keep an eye out for snowy fat bike rides to come. And more RAMBO fun once the snow melts.

Thank you to all who volunteered, had fun, and brought others to our beloved trail system!
