Space Cowboy starts with a pretty simple question:

How can we help a kid who dreams about going to the Moon discover a path to get there?

Few people embody that idea better than Danny Jaques of Danny’s Rocket Ranch.

Danny grew up on a ranch near Ignacio, Colorado, watching the Mercury, Gemini and Apollo missions and dreaming of becoming an astronaut. Danny eventually became a science teacher — and turned that childhood fascination with space into a mission to give young people the opportunities Danny wished for as a kid.

After discovering Space Camp at the U.S. Space & Rocket Center in Huntsville, Alabama, Danny began organizing trips for students in grades 4–12. Since then, Danny has helped take more than 500 students to Space Camp and was inducted into the Space Camp Hall of Fame in 2010.

Now Danny’s Rocket Ranch is partnering with Space Cowboy Colorado to help another young person take that first step.

As part of Space Cowboy’s Ridgway residency, one student from the host community will receive a scholarship to attend Space Camp.

Danny’s Rocket Ranch will join us at the October 2 Space Cowboy opening to share more about Danny’s story, Space Camp and the opportunities available to young people interested in aerospace and STEM.

It’s a pretty perfect Colorado Space Cowboy story: a kid from a ranch who looked up at the sky, dreamed about space, and has spent a lifetime helping other kids discover that those dreams might actually lead somewhere.

One of the things we’re most excited about with Space Cowboy is the chance to welcome Colorado Poet Laureate Crisosto Apache to Ridgway.

Apache’s poetry is striking, layered and deeply rooted in identity, memory, place and lived experience. Apache is the author of three poetry collections, including "Ghostword", winner of the Betty Berzon Emerging Writers Award, and was named Colorado’s 11th Poet Laureate in 2026.

We feel incredibly lucky to have Apache here as part of this exhibition.

On October 2, Apache will spend the afternoon working with Ridgway High School students in a poetry workshop, then join us that evening at the Decker Community Room for an artist talk and poetry reading from 6:30–7:30 p.m.

It’s a rare opportunity to hear one of Colorado’s most accomplished poets read in person, right here in Ridgway.

So what exactly is Space Cowboy?

For starters, there’s a ten-foot fiber rocket wearing a cowboy hat and space goggles, surrounded by a handcrafted Mission Control.

But the exhibition is about much more than one very memorable cowboy.

Space Cowboy explores the curiosity, resourcefulness and determination that have carried generations of Coloradans from ranches and railroads to research labs and launch pads. It brings together art, poetry, Colorado aerospace stories, photography and stories from the communities it visits.

Come experience it for yourself this Friday.

Somewhere in every Colorado community is a kid who dreams of going to the Moon — but doesn’t yet know how to get there.

That idea is at the heart of Space Cowboy Colorado, a four-year statewide project created by Trinidad artists Emilie Odeile and Ken Chapin of Dundee & Lee.

Using art, storytelling and community collaboration, Space Cowboy connects the many stories that make up Colorado’s Western heritage with the possibilities of its aerospace future.

And this October, Space Cowboy lands in Ridgway.

Join us for the opening during the Ridgway First Friday Art Walk on October 2 from 5–8 p.m. at the Decker Community Room.

The evening will include an artist talk and poetry reading with Colorado Poet Laureate Crisosto Apache from 6:30–7:30 p.m., along with informationDanny’s Rocket Ranch, which is partnering with Space Cowboy to provide a Space Camp scholarship for one student from the host community.
