Due to drought conditions and low snowpack around the state of Colorado and in our region, and in line with what some municipalities within the Colorado River District have already done, the Ridgway Town Council has put in place Stage 1 Voluntary Water Restrictions into effect since early April.

The Town Council has continually expressed a desire to conserve water in times of need to ensure effective and safe delivery of water to our community. The following Voluntary Water Restrictions, as described in the Town’s Water Conservation and Management Plan, shall remain in effect until modified or revoked by further order of the Town Council:
• No irrigating between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m., or when windy, in order to minimize evaporation, and anytime on Mondays.
• Properties located on the SOUTH side of Hwy 62 and Hunter Parkway – irrigate only on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.
• Properties located on the NORTH side of Hwy 62 and Hunter Parkway – irrigate only on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays.

Help care for one of Ouray’s most beloved paths next Saturday!

Join us for a volunteer trail work day on the Uncompahgre Riverwalk Trail to improve the section just north of town. We’ll tackle projects that make a big difference, including replacing fence posts, repairing erosion damage, and trimming back overgrowth to keep the trail safe and beautiful for everyone.

🗓 June 6, 2026 | 8 AM – 2 PM
📍 Meet at the end of Uncompahgre St. off Hwy 550 at the Uncompahgre Riverwalk Trail
🧤 What to bring: Work gloves and a willingness to get your hands a little dirty for a good cause.
📝 Register: tinyurl.com/ouraytrail

Whether you’re a regular trail user or just want to give back to the community, we’d love to have you out there! This event is made possible by the Colorado West Land Trust and Uncompahgre Watershed Partnership.

Water in Montrose this year...

From the City of Montrose:
Does the city have enough water?
Yes, but ...

Of the city’s various water resources, the city uses less than half of its allocation, and that allocation is relatively secure. The city and most other municipal drinking water suppliers receive their water from the Gunnison River via the Gunnison Tunnel and the Project 7 joint water treatment plant. Although the physical water comes from the Gunnison River, the water rights come from Ridgway Reservoir through a water exchange that allows municipal providers to pull water from the Gunnison River in exchange for allowing water from Ridgway Reservoir to be used for irrigation purposes.

Ridgway Reservoir started the year at over 80% full. As a result, even with low snowpack, the city’s full allocation of water is available within the reservoir for 2026. These water levels are closely monitored, and management decisions for 2026 and beyond are made in response to snowpack and runoff within the basin.
