dZi Foundation

dZi Foundation Helping Nepali communities prosper on their terms. Together, we help people break the cycle of poverty for good.

The dZi Foundation empowers some of Nepal's most isolated communities to make lasting improvements in their quality of life. These communities - with over 44,000 people - face complex challenges that require long-term holistic solutions. To ensure that our work results in progress that endures, we begin by learning about our communities' dreams and goals for their future. Projects are then designe

d, implemented, and maintained in partnership with community members, ensuring ownership and longevity. Together, we build earthquake-safe schools, construct bridges to provide year-round access to markets, grow new cash crops and improve yields, install potable water systems and sanitary toilets, and develop local cooperatives to increase savings and access to capital.

Urmila spent long days working as a laborer in the fields — earning just 500 rupees ($3.25) for eight hours of work.

With a no-interest loan from dZi, she purchased a gas stove and started selling food roadside near the fields. Now, in just three hours, she can earn up to 1,200 rupees ($7.80).

Strengthening Local Governance through Collaboration

We are delighted to share the successful completion of the ISPKN Project Kick-off Meetings across our six partner municipalities in the Koshi River Basin:

📍 Belaka Municipality
📍 Gadhi Rural Municipality
📍 Hanumannagar Municipality
📍 Halesi Tuwachung Municipality
📍 Kepilasgadhi Rural Municipality
📍 Sunkoshi Rural Municipality

These kick-off meetings provided a strong platform for coordination and collaboration, bringing together Mayors/Chairs, Chief Administrative Officers, municipal officials, and our local implementing partners.

The discussions focused on aligning project goals with local needs and the Local Governance Performance Assessment System (LGPAS), ensuring that dZi’s interventions remain integrated, sustainable, and impact-driven.

We deeply appreciate the commitment and leadership shown by our local government partners. Together, we look forward to building inclusive, thriving, and resilient communities and driving meaningful change.

Here’s to a future of shared prosperity! 🤝✨

🌸Meet Sushila Rai,

Born and raised in the Kepilasgadhi Rural Municipality of Khotang, Sushila was once a hardworking subsistence farmer. While she cultivated crops, vegetables, and managed traditional log beehives, her efforts were strictly for her family's survival.

Her life took a transformative turn through dZi’s Mauka program, which empowered her to transition from a farmer to an entrepreneur. 💪dZi provided the essential foundation for her journey, offering a grant alongside technical support, including financial literacy training and assistance with formal government business registration. 🐝

Today, Sushila successfully operates her own enterprise: Sumde Gaurisay Multipurpose Agriculture and Livestock Firm. She manages over 50 top bar hives. By selling honey, she now provides a sustainable income for her family and secures her children’s education. 🍯 In just three months, her enterprise generated a net profit of approximately $350. It's only onwards and upwards for her from now on.

“I feel incredibly happy when people call me from far away to order my honey. Sadly, I am not able to meet all their demands. What can be more joyful than that for a new entrepreneur like me? I am excited to add more hives and grow my business in the coming years,” says Sushila. ✨

Big moves for the Koshi River Basin! 🌊

We have just successfully concluded our Project Introduction and Planning Meeting for ISPKN (Initiation for Shared Prosperity in the Koshi River Basin in Nepal).

During this important milestone, we shared the program’s vision, key objectives, and the impact we aim to create, particularly for poor and marginalized communities across the Koshi Basin. The discussions centered around three core outcomes: improving access to essential services, enhancing economic opportunities, and reinforcing government leadership to drive inclusive and sustainable development.

Our team showed strong enthusiasm, a commitment to learning, and a shared determination to deliver the program effectively as we move forward on this meaningful journey.

✨Meet Renuka Sunuwar!

Renuka, born in Terhathum District, is a well-trained Dhaka weaver (a handwoven fabric). She is also a trainer who has helped many students learn. 💪 However, things completely changed for her after her marriage. She left her home, her job, and moved to her husband's house in Belaka Municipality in Udayapur District. She started her family and was a happy mother taking care of her child and family, until one day dZi’s program found her.

With dZi’s interest-free investment loan support, Renuka reignited her passion and was encouraged to start weaving again. 🌼 She brought her machine back from home (Terhathum) and purchased wool and threads from the loan to start again.

Renuka now weaves Dhaka for a Kurtha set, a coat, a scarf, a blouse, a shirt, and more. 🍀

“I am happy to start my work again. Now I will continue weaving Dhaka. However, here in Belaka, there is no market for Dhaka, so I sell the product in Terhathum, as it is a hub for Dhaka production.” Says Renuka.

dZi supports women for economic independence and prosperity. When women are supported, they become limitless! Renuka is a perfect example. 🌸✨

✨Meet Sita Magrati, a resident of Sunkoshi Rural Municipality, who runs a small stall in the BP Highway to meet her end needs. She sells quick snacks such as chips, fruits, chatpate, and water.

The competition for her was high, as many others have also set up stalls in the same area. Despite Sita’s dedication to her customers, she usually experienced low customer flow. 📉The main reason was that she did not have a fridge. Most stalls sold chilled energy drinks, soft drinks, and fruit juices—products that are in high demand. However, due to budget constraints, she could never invest in a fridge, as her earnings were always spent on household expenses and her children’s education. 📚

For Sita, a ray of hope came with dZi’s interest-free investment loan support. With the loan amount she bought a fridge to expand her business, adding chilled drinks and juices in her stall for customers to enjoy their ride break. 🌈

Now, she is attracting more customers than ever before and her sales have almost grown double in daily basis, thereby strengthening her livelihood. 💪

She says, “I am the sole breadwinner for the family. My husband cannot work due to his health issues. The newly purchased fridge has helped me increase my sales and generate more income. I am incredibly happy.” 🌸

dZi supports micro-enterprises in creating sustainable livelihoods, strengthening local economies, and empowering families toward self-reliance. ✨

Women are shaping the future of their communities every day!

They are farmers nurturing the land, entrepreneurs starting their own businesses, mothers and mentors guiding the next generation, and leaders bringing together entire villages.

At dZi, we are proud to partner with women of the Koshi River Basin, whose knowledge, resilience, and vision are building brighter futures across the region.

Together, they are creating lasting change.

Happy International Women's Day!

dZi Foundation is honored to support the Social Welfare Council (SWC) in Nepal in launching its new digital service platform, iPACT (Integrated Platform for Aid, Compliance and Transparency). The system was inaugurated by Rt. Hon. Prime Minister Sushila Karki, who highlighted its potential to enhance the Council’s efficiency, transparency, and predictability. She also underscored the importance of effectively implementing the one-door system to facilitate and streamline services for non-governmental organizations.

Representatives from the Association of INGOs in Nepal (AIN), NGO Federation Nepal (NFN), and Federation of Democratic NGOs Nepal (FEDEN) expressed appreciation to the Government of Nepal for introducing this digital initiative. They shared optimism that the platform will strengthen service delivery- particularly in project affiliation, approval, and review processes- ensuring greater policy alignment, regulatory compliance, and more effective utilization of foreign grants for national and community priorities.

During the ceremony, Rt. Hon. Prime Minister Sushila Karki recognized and felicitated Rakesh Karna, Country Director of dZi Foundation Nepal, for the Foundation’s valuable technical and strategic support in realizing this important milestone for the Council’s digital transformation.
