Elkwood Arts, a program of Dickinson Center, Inc., supports Intellectually and Developmentally Disabled adults with a woodworking opportunity, who receive Community Participation support services and life skills training, while producing quality, handcrafted products made almost entirely from certified Pennsylvania Hardwoods. Elkwood Arts, a program of Dickinson Center, Inc., was developed in
1994 when searching for a way to meet the needs of adults with intellectual disabilities who were unable to obtain employment, or who were unable to attend to the required regimen of other area workshops. At Elkwood Arts, products start out in the woodshop and then go to the floor supervisor who works with consumer employees to glue, sand, finish, etc. Our production staff includes a production manager, floor supervisor, full-time/part time woodworkers, and a graphic designer. It has given to people with developmental disabilities the opportunity to maximize their independence, integrate into the community, and above all: a chance to work. Some of the success with individuals can be attributed to the one-on-one attention the program is able to provide to workers. The individuals served by Elkwood Arts range in functioning levels from mild to severe. Some have been able to accomplish feats that were once believed to be beyond their reach. We have seen the commitment of the individuals who work at Elkwood Arts and would like it to grow so that we may continue to meet their needs as well as the needs of others we have not yet been able to serve.
