In true community spirit, four village organizations have recently worked together to help beautify the central area of the Village.   The Ridgewood Beautification Team, the Women Gardeners of Ridgewood, the Conservancy for Ridgewood Public Lands and the Ridgewood Parks and Recreation Department have organized the planting of hundreds of annuals and several shrubs, in the Central Business District.

The Ridgewood Beautification Team has added more containers along the main streets and has filled them with a selection of colorful annuals.  Recognizing the July Celebration of our 250th Anniversary, a red, white, and blue theme has been selected.

The Women Gardeners of Ridgewood, which maintains the Van Neste gardens along East Ridgewood Avenue, has donated fifteen flowering shrubs and a dogwood tree.  In addition, at the request of the National Garden Club and the Garden Club of NJ, the Women Gardeners, in conjunction with the Conservancy for Ridgewood Public Lands, have filled the large urns near the War Memorial and Gold Star Memorial with red, white, and blue flowers, honoring all Veterans for their service.

This could not have been accomplished without the support and help of the Ridgewood Parks and Recreation Department, along with the many volunteers who organized these projects, and who came out to help plant.

We don’t just dig, plant and beautify, We engage.

Children in grades 3-6 should join us for our Green Kids program at the Stable in coordination with Ridgewood Parks & Recreation in the spring and fall. The children enjoy planting in their garden, learning about the environment and have some fun too. This long running program is in its 20th year.

In December the children make holiday wreaths from all natural materials. Always a sold out event.

Each year we award qualifying RHS Seniors with a scholarship. Our Scholarship Committee coordinates with the high school, review applications and interview qualifying applicants.

We host a community educational event with a luncheon and speaker.

Let’s not forget the Secret Gardens Tour. A committee has already begun planning and looking at gardens for 2027. Always a special day visiting beautiful gardens that will inspire you. Mark your calendar for
Sunday, June 6, 2027!

WHR is proud to present this year’s Candidate for the Environmental Achievement Award to Julia Grant.
Julia is the current President of the RHS Green Club. She leads the meetings and organizes groups to work on a variety of projects including Campus Clean Ups, overseeing Super Science Saturday, and RHS participation in Ridgewood’s Earth Day. The Green Club also maintains the RHS garden and this year negotiated with the cafeteria to compost the organic waste.
Additionally, Julia is the Student Representative to the Green Ridgewood Committee. In this position, she attends Green Committee meetings, advocates for sustainable initiatives, and gains insight on how to direct student efforts. Through Green Ridgewood she has volunteered on projects including town wide tree planting, No Mow May, rain garden creation, and the Duck Pond revitalization. Congratulations Julia!

Another year end celebration. While our year “ends” in June, our work in the gardens throughout the Village has just begun. WGR marked the day with lunch at the HoHoKus Inn. We conducted the official vote of the new slate of officers. After a successful two year term, including celebrating our 100th Anniversary, outgoing President Sharon Gilsenan turned things over to incoming President Maria Gilosa and VP Estie Van Volkenburgh. Congratulations and good luck.
