The Cardinal Way prairie has been mowed to remove future w**d seed, allow light to reach the small native seedlings, and interseed warm season grasses. We are patiently excited to see more native grasses in the mix next year.

Starting a prairie takes time, patience, and a lot of w**ding. Last evening we clipped and bagged all the Canada thistle seeds we could find. Then we got to walk around and see all the good things popping up.

The prairie will be mowed today as part of that w**ding maintenance. Mowing a prairie in the first 3 years is critical to keeping w**d seeds from maturing and it also opens up the canopy to allow the slower growing natives get sunlight.

It’s a bummer to cut off the beautiful flowers but they will be back, stronger and better for it.

The WI DNR has compiled a lot of great resources on how to plant native plants and a list of native plant sales occurring this spring/summer across the state. Check it out 👉https://dnr.wisconsin.gov/topic/endangeredresources/nativeplants

🌿🌼Native plants support the entire food web by providing food for insects, birds, bats, small mammals and other wildlife. This is particularly important now that scientists are documenting global declines in insect populations. Used in a rain garden, native plants help minimize flooding and filter out pollutants. The variety of colors, shapes and sizes adds beauty to any property.

The ground is soft and wet, the official start of spring has passed and planting native species can bring beauty as well as help the environment.
