With thanksgiving just behind us, the American Legion would like to extend thanks to the Legion Auxiliary for their support. The American Legion Auxiliary was founded in 1919, officially organized in 1920, and incorporated by congress in 1925. The Auxiliary was formed to support the Legion and veterans through assisting at VA facilities, advocating for veterans issues, providing youth programs and scholarships, and many other forms of support. The famous poppy program seen around Veterans Day was an auxiliary project started in 1924. Membership is limited to grandmothers, mothers, sisters, male or female spouse, and direct and adopted female descendants of an American Legion member or any male or female service member. A special local auxiliary member we would like to give a shout out to is Florence Wasley. She has been a very active auxiliary member and her biography is attached. She can usually be found at the Ridgeway Legion steak feeds with her son Bill and other family members. Thank you Florence for all you have done and continue to do and also to the many other supporters that have helped at steak feeds, veteran memorial, and many other veteran related activities.

In honor of the upcoming Veterans Day holiday I think it would be appropriate to give a little background on who the Ridgeway American Legion is named after. We are the Beckett-Kurth post due to 2 service members that passed while fighting for our freedom.

The second honoree is Charles Kurth. See yesterday’s (11/9) post for the 1st honoree. He was born on Jan 16, 1889 in Ridgeway. He was the son of Julius and Sarah Jane (Short) Kurth. Both of his parents are buried in Saint Bridget’s Cemetery. He also had 2 brothers named James and Julius Kurth and one sister, Ann Kurth. Julius ran a tavern in Ridgeway from 1925 until moving to Madison in 1945 and was village president and a trustee for several years. Charles served in the Army as a cook with Company C of the 5th Trench Mortar Battery, which was part of the 5th Infantry Division. He died on Oct 3rd, 1918 at the age of 29 from pneumonia. Charles is buried at the Oise-Aisne American Cemetery in France.
