Allegany Cadets Rank in National American Rocketry Challenge.

May 21st, 2025 by WCBC Radio

The Cumberland Composite Squadron of the Civil Air Patrol traveled Saturday to The Plains, Virginia to compete in the National American Rocketry Challenge (TARC). Team Cumberland, coached by 2nd Lt Rich VanBlarcom who also serves as the squadron’s Aerospace Education Officer earned a spot at the national competition by ranking among the top 100 teams out of more than 1,000 nationwide. At the national level, only 42 teams advanced to the final round and Team Cumberland rose to the challenge, securing an impressive 11th place in the nation. As a result of their outstanding performance, they have been invited to participate in a prestigious nine-month NASA high-power rocket experiment.

The team begins this project each November, starting with rocket design and simulation using specialized computer software. They meet two to three times per week to build and refine their rockets, and conduct test launches in all kinds of weather, demonstrating their dedication, resilience, and passion for aerospace.
