When egg prices spiked, politicians screeched "corporate greed."

Here's what actually happened.

Between mid-October 2024 and early March 2025, bird flu killed 50.7 million egg-laying hens. Wholesale prices peaked at $8.20 a dozen in February. As farmers rebuilt their flocks, prices fell to $3.74 by April.

"Greed" didn't simply disappear. The balancing forces of the market corrected. Now, some politicians are assuming high prices are proof markets have failed, and it's time for price caps, subsidies, government-run stores, and more. These policies might change the price on the tag, but they don't more abundance.

We believe in the opposite approach: remove barriers that make it harder to produce, invest, build, and compete.
