Ducks Unlimited - Southern Region Wetland Conservation Programs in 13 southern states

Ducks Unlimited's Southern Region office is located in Ridgeland, Mississippi and was established in 1990 to protect and restore wetlands and other wildlife habitat in the southeastern United States. The Southern Region is tasked with protecting and restoring wetlands and other wildlife habitat in 13 states that include some of the most important wintering habitat on the continent and two, Level 1

continental habitat priorities for DU. Ducks Unlimited and its partners have conserved nearly two million acres of waterfowl habitat from Oklahoma south to New Mexico, east to Florida, and north to Virginia.

A Huge Win for Texas Wildlife!

After more than 15 years of work, Ducks Unlimited has completed the restoration of Dressing Point Island in Matagorda County!

This important coastal rookery had shrunk dramatically from 13 acres in 1984 to just 4 acres in 2022, putting thousands of nesting birds at risk.

Today, thanks to strong partnerships and dedicated conservation efforts, the island has been restored to 13 acres! Project work included installing 3,400 feet of protective breakwater. Now, the habitat can support more than 8,000 nesting bird pairs.

Even better, this project is already boosting oyster growth and seagrass recovery, improving water quality, and strengthening the entire ecosystem.

This project reflects the power of partnership, made possible through collaboration with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's National Wildlife Refuge System and Coastal Program, Texas General Land Office CEPRA Program, the Texas Trustee Implementation Group, and the Matagorda Bay Mitigation Trust.
This is what conservation in action looks like!

Last week, Governor Jeff Landry signed our bill to modernize the Louisiana Ducks Unlimited license plate. We are grateful to the Governor, the Louisiana State Legislature, and the bill sponsor, Rep. Jacob Landry, for their continued support of our DU volunteers' dedication to our mission.

It’s simple. Since the DU License Plate was created in 1997, proceeds have supported our unmatched record of conserving 570,000 acres of habitat in Louisiana. Modernizing the license plate will improve how we deliver waterfowl habitat around Louisiana and allow purchasers of the DU plate to annually support DU and our partnership with the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries. This effort would not have succeeded without the work and support of our Louisiana Ducks Unlimited volunteers and their commitment to improving waterfowl habitat for future generations of duck hunters in the Sportsman’s Paradise.

🚧Big news for the Central Wetlands!🦆

Construction is now underway on Phase 2 of the 40 Arpent Canal Wetlands Enhancement. This is a major step towards restoring this once thriving marsh.

This project is spearheaded by our partners Ducks Unlimited, who secured funding through a strong public/private collaboration, including $300,000 from CPRA through our Conservation and Restoration Partnership Fund.

What this means:
▪ 56,000 feet of earthen terraces
▪ ~745 acres of enhanced marsh habitat
▪ Reduced erosion and saltwater intrusion
▪ Healthier habitat for fish and wildlife

Working alongside nearby restoration efforts, this project will help rebuild marsh, protect against storms and wave erosion, and support the long-term health of the Central Wetlands, St. Bernard Parish and the City of New Orleans.

Together, we're bringing life back to our wetlands. 💚

The Louisiana Ducks Unlimited Policy team was honored to attend LA Sportsmen's Caucus event in Baton Rouge.

DU is proud of our track record of raising $5M in the state and turning this into $20M that supports waterfowl habitat, rice agriculture, and hunting opportunities in Louisiana every year. Thank you to the Louisiana legislators who are valuable partners in the work to keep Louisiana the "Sportsmen's Paradise"!

Healthy soil plays a critical role in protecting our water resources.

💧Soil absorbs rainfall and irrigation, reducing runoff and erosion while helping filter pollutants before they reach streams, rivers, and lakes. It also helps recharge aquifers that supply water for communities, agriculture, and wildlife. Good soil stewardship helps ensure clean and reliable water for Texans today and in the future.
