Our next person is considered the first African American woman to travel into space. This pioneer to be recognized is Ms. Mae Carol Jemison.

Jemison (born October 17, 1956) is an American engineer, physician, and former NASA astronaut. She became the first black woman to travel into space when she served as a mission specialist aboard the Space Shuttle Endeavour. Jemison joined NASA's astronaut corps in 1987 and was selected to serve for the STS-47 mission, during which she orbited the Earth for nearly eight days on September 12–20, 1992.

Born in Alabama and raised in Chicago, Jemison graduated from Stanford University with degrees in chemical engineering as well as African and African-American studies. She then earned her medical degree from Cornell University. Jemison was a doctor for the Peace Corps in Liberia and Sierra Leone from 1983 until 1985 and worked as a general practitioner. In pursuit of becoming an astronaut, she applied to NASA.

Jemison left NASA in 1993 and founded a technology research company. She later formed a non-profit educational foundation and through the foundation is the principal of the 100 Year Starship project funded by DARPA. Jemison also wrote several books for children and appeared on television several times, including in a 1993 episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation. She holds several honorary doctorates and has been inducted into the National Women's Hall of Fame and the International Space Hall of Fame.

Each Friday of this month, we are going to recognize several African American men and women who have made a significant contribution to America and the rest of the world in the fields of science, politics, law, sports, the arts, entertainment, and so much more.

The first contributor to be recognized is Mr. Thurgood Marshall. Thurgood Marshall (July 2, 1908 – January 24, 1993) was an American lawyer and civil rights activist who served as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States from October 1967 until October 1991. Marshall was the Court's first African-American justice. Prior to his judicial service, he successfully argued several cases before the Supreme Court, including Brown v. Board of Education.

Born in Baltimore, Maryland, Marshall graduated from the Howard University School of Law in 1933. He established a private legal practice in Baltimore before founding the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, where he served as executive director. In that position, he argued several cases before the Supreme Court, including Smith v. Allwright, Shelley v. Kraemer, and Brown v. Board of Education, the latter of which held that racial segregation in public education is a violation of the Equal Protection Clause.

In 1961, President John F. Kennedy appointed Marshall to the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. Four years later, President Lyndon B. Johnson appointed Marshall as the United States Solicitor General. In 1967, Johnson successfully nominated Marshall to succeed retiring Associate Justice Tom C. Clark as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States. Marshall retired during the administration of President George H. W. Bush, and was succeeded by Clarence Thomas.

Thank you, Thurgood, for being a beacon of light and hope throughout our community and the the world. You are extremely appreciated.

Another opportunity to run for a good cause.... Dr. Woods demolished his previous 5K (3.11 miles) time with 23:13, which placed him #9 out of 300+ participants and #2 in the 30-34 year age category for the Mississippi Meltdown Marathon.

The Mississippi Meltdown Marathon partners with St. Dominic hospital to serve with the purpose to raise awareness of the obesity epidemic in the United States and particularly in Mississippi. This year, over 1200+ people devoted their energy and bodies to support this cause.

Great way to represent our foundation, Dr. Woods! 🤩🥳 🎉

To have the opportunity to serve is one thing....making children happy that you’re reading to them is another. Dr. Seuss Birthday, which is tomorrow, is remembered by bringing children together by incorporating reading activities to engage in a nationwide reading celebration.

It was a pleasure to keep this tradition going by reading to 3 different elementary schools around the Jackson metropolitan area this year. Those schools were Barack Obama Magnet in Jackson, Mississippi, Pisgah Elementary in Brandon, Mississippi, and Webster Elementary in Yazoo City, Mississippi.

A humongous thank you to Pisgah Elementary School, for allowing Dr. Antwon D. Woods to serve as Grand Marshall for your Read Across America parade, and Barack H. Obama Magnet an IB World School and Lower Elementary school for honoring our foundation as reader for the day. Thank you all for your wonderful hospitality during this amazing time engaging with your students.
