If a disaster happened today, would everyone in your household know what to do?
Make a plan together. Discuss meeting locations, emergency contacts, and how you'll communicate if you're separated.

Join us at the 2026 Lowcountry 4-H Convention!

We are less than 40 days away from the launch of the inaugural Lowcountry 4-H Convention on Saturday, September 19, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Citadel Mall in Charleston! This event, designed to increase awareness of South Carolina 4-H and its opportunities as well as of the services of Clemson Cooperative Extension, features programs and activations for all ages:

• The Lowcountry 4-H Cooking Competition and the Lowcountry 4-H Poster Contest
• Workshops for the whole community hosted at the Clemson Extension TEACH Center and led by both South Carolina 4-H and Tri-County Clemson Extension staff
• Taste of 4-H: STEM Edition 'mock' meetings hosted by Reforge Charleston
• A Back-to-School Giveaway and a Vendor Market for local businesses, farmers, artisans, and craftspersons — both co-hosted by partner nonprofit, I Serve With Joy
• A Community Resources Fair featuring local agencies, fellow youth-serving organizations, and other nonprofits

If you have access to FOX 24 News Now, I will be featured in a promotional segment about South Carolina 4-H, highlighting the Lowcountry 4-H Convention, next Friday, August 21, at 12:30pm and 11pm, as well as on their YouTube channel, so please be on the lookout!

While my committee and I are appreciative of all the support, donations, sponsorships, and feedback we've received to make this event happen, we could still use some hands-on assistance on the day of the event to make it a great success that the entire community can enjoy. Whether it's staff, community members, 4-H'ers/alums, any Clemson volunteers, or teen council members and ambassadors, ALL are welcome to register to volunteer: https://ideali.st/RxYrku

Volunteers will be assigned to either one specific program area from those listed above, the setup team, or the cleanup crew. They will report to their program team lead during their time slot for day-of instructions. No previous convention or conference experience is needed! Each volunteer will receive a lanyard with their assignment details. They should turn it in at the end of their volunteer shift in exchange for a "Thank you" gift!

You can also attend the event just for the festivities and to have fun! Either way, please share the opportunity within your communities and circles of influence.

Booths are still available for the Vendor Market and Community Resources Fair inside the Citadel Mall! Learn more at https://www.eventbrite.com/e/2026-lowcountry-4-h-convention-booth-registration-registration-1985087011689.

Registration is still open for the contests, workshops, and Taste of 4-H: STEM Edition programs at https://www.eventbrite.com/e/2026-lowcountry-4-h-convention-workshops-contests-registration-registration-1985087151106.

Please tell anyone who wants to learn more about the event or become a sponsor to reach out to Dorchester County 4-H Youth Development Agent and Convention Director Tawanah Reeves-Ligon at [email protected].

Thanks for helping us to "make the best better" with 4-H and Clemson Extension!

🥗 Friday Lunchbox Challenge!

Healthy eating doesn't have to mean giving up your favorite foods. Sometimes, one small swap can make a meal more nutritious while still tasting great.

Here are a few simple ideas:

🥖 Instead of white bread ➡️ Try whole-grain bread or wraps.

🥔 Instead of chips every day ➡️ Add crunchy veggies with hummus or air-popped popcorn.

🍪 Instead of sugary cookies ➡️ Pack fresh fruit or a homemade trail mix.

🥤 Instead of sugary drinks ➡️ Fill a reusable bottle with water or low-fat milk.

🧀 Instead of highly processed snacks ➡️ Choose cheese, yogurt, nuts, or hard-boiled eggs for protein.

Remember, healthy eating is about progress—not perfection. One small change today can lead to lasting healthy habits tomorrow.

This week's challenge: Share one healthy lunch swap you've made (or would like to make) in the comments. Your idea could inspire another family to try something new! 🍎

Hello beekeeping enthusiasts!
Registration for the 2026 BASICS OF BEEKEEPING HYBRID COURSE is now live. Class begins September 15th.

Details about this year’s course are in the attached flyer. You can also learn more and register through our Eventbrite page at https://www.eventbrite.com/e/2026-basics-of-beekeeping-hybrid-course-tickets-1996816670414?aff=oddtdtcreator

This course is designed to give new and experienced beekeepers the knowledge needed to be self-sustaining beekeepers in the modern era. Whether you intend to keep bees as a business or a hobby, this course will prepare you with the solid foundation every beekeeper must master to be successful. This course combines lectures, reading assignments, and field days in working bee yards to build necessary skills and help new beekeepers get comfortable working with these amazing creatures. Experienced beekeepers also will benefit from the updated information about honey bee health and pest management.

Thank you for your interest. We had quite a long waiting list, so register quickly to reserve your spot. We hope to see you next month in class and in the bee yard.
