🐾 National Dog Day: Meet Ember & Moki!

For our second National Dog Day spotlight, we're introducing you to two K9s you may not often see or hear about.

Ember and Moki are Historic Human Remains Detection K9s with Clark County Sheriff's Office Search and Rescue, working alongside their handlers, Moriah Berthrong and Victoria Armstrong.

Most recently, the teams have assisted with ongoing searches for Jamie Grissim, who was 16 when she disappeared in 1971. CCSO investigators believe Jamie was a victim of convicted serial killer Warren Forrest, and search efforts have continued in the Dole Valley area in hopes of finding answers for her family.

This month, Ember, Moki, and their handlers received Paws Hero Awards for their dedication and involvement in the last five searches for Jamie.

Their specialized skills continue to play an important role in this decades-old case, and we're proud to recognize their work this National Dog Day. 🐕‍🦺💙

Our hearts are with the family and loved ones of the 19-year-old whose life was tragically lost.

Members of our Clark County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue Dive & K9 teams were honored to assist our partner agencies in bringing him home.

Please keep his family, friends, and everyone affected by this unimaginable loss in your thoughts.

Yesterday evening at 7:34 PM, Camas police and fire units were dispatched to a water emergency at the south side of Round Lake in Lacamas Park. The 911 caller reported a male was struggling to swim after jumping off the rope swing near the Lacamas Creek Dam.

What were your friendly neighborhood Search & Rescue heroes and she-roes up to this weekend?

✔️ Launching sand into the stratosphere.
✔️ Getting vehicles intentionally stuck.
✔️ Getting them intentionally unstuck.
✔️ Teaching recovery techniques.
✔️ Hanging out with good humans and even better K9s.
✔️ Helping a stranded family get back on their way.

Most people spend their free time trying NOT to get stuck.

Because when someone gets stranded miles from help, it’s a terrible time to discover nobody knows what they’re doing.

We’d rather practice now than improvise later.

The radio crackles.

An airplane has crashed somewhere in the rugged mountains of Southwest Washington. Multiple passengers. Survivor count unknown. Information is limited.

Within minutes, Search and Rescue volunteers from across the region mobilize toward the crash site.

In the first tri-county regional training exercise of its kind, more than 110 Search and Rescue volunteers from five agencies came together for a full-scale simulated aircraft crash exercise, testing the skills, equipment, and teamwork we'll rely on when lives are truly on the line.

Over two operational periods, volunteers searched more than two square miles of heavily forested and post-burn terrain, utilizing K9s, drones, medics, ground teams, Incident Command, and specialized search resources to locate clues, rescue survivors, and recover the missing.

Real emergencies don't come with rehearsals. Every exercise strengthens our partnerships, sharpens our skills, and builds confidence before the next real call for help.

Thank you to every volunteer, role player, and partner agency who made this incredible weekend possible. Together, we proved that Search and Rescue in the Pacific Northwest is more than a collection of teams. It's a community united by one mission: bringing loved ones home.

🐾 Certification Complete! 🐾

This past weekend, our Human Remains Detection (HRD) K9 teams traveled to Idaho Falls for their annual certification testing through the North American Police Work Dog Association (NAPWDA).

Over three intensive days, handlers and K9s demonstrated their skills in off-leash obedience, open-area searches, water, rubble, building interiors, vehicles, and buried-subject detection - testing the reliability and precision these teams bring to every mission.

Congratulations to Moriah & K9 Ember and Victoria & K9 Moki on their successful recertifications! We are incredibly proud of the dedication, training, and teamwork these teams demonstrate year after year.

A special thank you to NAPWDA Master Trainers Marijke Barnson and Greg Strickland for sharing your expertise, and to K9 Scent Solutions for hosting this outstanding training and certification event.
