Tired of gas powered leaf blowers ruining your enjoyment of the summer months?

As you are probably most aware, the current law in Ridgefield allows one to use as many gas powered leaf blowers as one likes, every day of the year, from 7 am to 9 pm. The photo below was taken in Ridgefield on the corner of Gilbert and Main. Unfortunately this scene is not atypical. Multiple landscapers, each with a gas powered backpack, chasing leaves or grass clippings.

The town of Ridgefield is currently considering a better quality of life balance by restricting the use of these polluting (noise and toxic air emissions) machines from memorial day to labor day. There are exceptions allowed (e.g. storm damage from severe weather events).

If you agree that a summer restriction is needed, please attend the Sept 2nd Hearing at town hall at 7:30 pm. Come and tell your story to the Board about how the noise adversely affects your enjoyment of your property and home.

My name is Grace O’Grady, an intern within the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection’s Waste Engineering and Enforcement Division and an undergraduate student at Yale University. Through my internship, I have been working to collect information on electronic waste recycling in state of Connecticut.

Over the past 2 months, I have been learning about the inner workings of residential electronic waste (or e-waste) recycling in Connecticut, comparing our program to other programs across the United States, and trying to understand what the process of e-waste collection is currently like for Connecticut residents.

If you could please fill out the following Microsoft form regarding electronic waste residential awareness and send it to any friends or connections that you have that live in the state of Connecticut, I would greatly appreciate it. I am looking for people who feel well informed about e-waste recycling as well as those who have never heard of it before. It would be great to get a variety of opinions to get a holistic understanding of the current status of e-waste recycling.

All responses are completely anonymous, which should provide residents with the ability to express their opinions openly about how the e-waste recycling program ought to be improved or what things should remain constant.

Thank you to all who learned how to protect the 61% of birds who migrate at night! And thank you to our co-host Ridgefield Library. Craig Repasz , the director of Lights Out Ct. presented the dangers of night lights to us and the birds. Lukas Keras bound for Yale next year discussed the effect on moths, one of our most important pollinators.
Race and the Norwalk River Watershed Association will move ahead with a regional initiative to darken our skies. Stay tuned.
