Today, we celebrate Juneteenth! ✊🏾✨ While today is a vital day to honor freedom and Black history, it’s also a wonderful time to celebrate the deep, historic ties between Black Americans and environmental stewardship.

From the legendary Buffalo Soldiers—who served as some of our nation's very first wilderness park rangers—to pioneering naturalists and modern-day conservation leaders, Black history is deeply intertwined with the protection of our natural world. 🌲🦅

True freedom means equal access to the beauty, safety, and solace of our public lands. Today and every day, the Friends of Ridgefield NWR are committed to ensuring our trails and wetlands are a welcoming, safe space for everyone to connect with nature.

*Notice* The Ridgefield National Wildlife Refuge Auto Tour Route will be closed to the public again on Friday, June 26, for general maintenance and habitat work.

As always, the Carty Unit trails will be open for walking, and if you hit the timing just right, you may catch the new Community Nature Center open! (based on staff availability)

Stay tuned to the Ridgefield NWR official website for details and updates: https://www.fws.gov/refuge/ridgefield

Happy National Get Outdoors Day! 🌲🧢

Today is all about celebrating the incredible public lands right in our backyard. If you are heading out to explore the Refuge today, or hitting the local trails, we want you to have a fantastic time—but we also need to talk about the thermostat! 🌡️🔥

It is going to be a hot one today, and the heat is sticking around for part of the coming week. As you head outside, please remember to take care of yourselves:
💧 Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate! Bring way more water than you think you need.
🧢 Protect your skin: Wear sunscreen, a wide-brimmed hat, and light layers.
🌳 Seek the shade: Avoid being out in the direct, open sun during the peak heat of the day. If you want to see the Refuge while staying in the AC, it’s a perfect week for a loop around the Auto Tour Route!

🗓️ And finally, a quick PSA for our wonderful followers who purchased our official 2026 Friends Calendar... If you looked at your wall this morning, you might have noticed that according to our calendar, "National Get Outdoors Day" is listed for both today and tomorrow. As much as we would love a 48-hour weekend dedicated entirely to being outside, we promise it’s only a one-day celebration today (Saturday)! We sincerely apologize for the printing double-take, but hey, look at the bright side—it's just a reminder from us to love the outdoors twice as much! 😉

Stay cool, stay hydrated, and enjoy your Saturday! 👋 Water you waiting for? Grab that sunscreen!

Nature thrives in full color. Happy Pride! 🌈🌾

From the smallest wildflower to the soaring sandhill crane, every bit of flora and fauna plays a crucial role in the diverse rainbow of our ecosystem.

We believe our human community should be just as beautifully diverse. At our Refuge, every person in every body is welcome to enjoy the healing benefits, quiet moments, and endless wonders that nature provides.

Step outside, breathe in the fresh air, and know that you belong here exactly as you are. 🏳️‍🌈✨
