Honoring the life and service of retired Firefighter/Paramedic George Lingle.
Late last week, Clark-Cowlitz Fire Rescue and Local 3674 lost one of our own with the unexpected passing of FF/PM George Lingle.
To say George dedicated his life to the fire service is an understatement. George became a volunteer firefighter with Clark County Fire District 11 in 1973 on his 16th birthday. He then spent the next nearly 46 years in the fire service, serving as a volunteer, a part-time firefighter, a career firefighter, a paramedic, and a strike team leader in the wildland sector. Even after retiring from the line in 2019, George continued to serve his community as a support volunteer, dropping whatever he was doing at any given time to go to the station and respond one of CCFR’s water tenders to help the crews. In essence, George was always on duty.
When George wasn’t at work, he was busy being involved in the community. George coached basketball, among other sports, for his children and their friends. He was an active member of his church, and service was almost always at the forefront of his mind. He mentored many of a firefighter during his career. He delivered care and compassion in his own way. He would lay on the ground with a scared child, helping take their fear away during their time of need. He’d help an older person up to bed with a smile on his face, no matter how many times he’d been there previously.
George provided many a story to those of us who had the pleasure of working with him. Too many to recount on this thread. Even though he retired nearly seven years ago, his coworkers still bring up the, “remember that time when George did…” on a regular basis.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to George’s family as they go through this difficult time. George, we will miss your compassion, your ability to think outside the box, and the example you set for the rest of us. Rest easy up there, and we’ll see you again down the road.
