Scouting America Troop 55 of the Greater California Council, Scouting America 🇺🇸 Council went to Camp Geronimo this summer! We were the last session for them, and they didn' dissapoint! Troop 55 scouts worked on merit badges like Cooking, Lifesaving, and R***e shooting, Climbing, Chess, and Pioneering, and many others. In addition to the standard merit badges, 4 scouts participated in the First Year camper program called Brownsea Island, modeled after the first summer camp put together by Lord Robert Baden-Powell, the creator of Scouting.

Camp Geronimo even had their own take on merit badges, called Geronibadges, that scouts could earn. These included Over-the-counter medication taught by the Health Lodge, Invasive Species taught by the Nature Center, and Cryptozoology!

Tuesday morning, scouts and leaders took part in the Polar Bear swim. While the pool was a little crisp at 0530 in the morning, the ice bath at the end certainly woke us up! Tuesday was also OA day, so scouts and leaders in OA were encouraged to wear their sashes all day.

The troop worked very hard with the absolute best Camp Commissioner we could ask for in Stephanie! She made the week for these boys, getting up to shenanigans and general mischief. In the end, the troop earned the GeroniGold award, having earned an excellent 5/5 days on campsite inspections, participating in a conservation service project, and many other milestones. Our SPL and ASPL did a fantastic job leading the troop through this.

It was a long drive there and back, but when asked, the boys agreed, 10/10, would go back again!

Over the weekend, Scouting America Troop 55 scouts went backpacking at Cottonwood Lakes! 7 scouts tried their hand at carrying their own gear for the weekend, learning what works and what doesn't. Cottonwood Lakes is a great entry into the word of backpacking. Weather was great, and everyone says they want to go back!

Troop 55 celebrated a Court of Honor last Monday. A Court of Honor is an opportunity to recognize Scouts who have earned rank, merit badges, and special awards. Presentations inlcuded 27 merit badges, 8 Scout ranks, 3 Tenderfoot ranks, 2 First Class ranks, 2 Star ranks, and 10 special awards. Scouts elected as OA Induction candidates were recognized, and scouts who participated in Camporall and the Council Day of Service recieved their event patches! What a great night!

.america Troop 55 spent the Month of May on the Pioneering program feature! They learned the basic hitches and lashings required to join staves and spars together to build structures. The senior scouts even got the opportunity to teach lashings at the Trail to First Class event!

LEGENDARY! Troop 55 attended Camporall this weekend! Hosted by the Southern Sierra Service Area of the Council! This was the first Camporall for Troop 55. Some of our scouts have been to Camporall before, but this was the first time for our unit! These guys came in and did an amazing job!

A few statistics: We are a new .america troop, formed in July 2025. We had 1 Life scout, 2 Star scouts, 1 First Class Scout, 2 Tenderfoot Scouts, 2 Scout Rank scouts, and 8 unranked scouts! For 4 of these scouts, this was their first campout with the troop!

The weather didn't help any. The grounds were a fantastic setting, but the rain made things a challenge. That didn't stop these guys. From Friday night through Sunday morning, spirits were high! (Although the rain and cold started to take a toll, as it does!)

The .scouting callout for 303 took place Saturday night. 5 of our scouts and 2 of our leaders were tapped out and became OA Ordeal Candidates! Congratulations!

We talked about the weekend going in, and our goal was to have fun and learn where we needed to improve. We focused on positive attitude and lifting each other up through the Camporall challenges, we knew our patrols would struggle with. The bonus on Sunday, was finding out that all 3 patrols placed in challenges, out of 27 patrols!

The Fancy Capybaras placed 2nd in the Working Webs Challenge. The Agent Ducks placed 3rd in Reactor Transport. The Radioactive Goats placed 3rd in Secret Challenge #1 (BB), and 2nd in Knife Throwing! Troop 55 placed in the 3rd place category in overall points! Way beyond our expectations when our patrols are still floating between the forming, storming, and norming phases! There was definitely some performing in there!

While we had some adversity (tent pitching could use some work, especially with all the rain), and there were some challenges our patrols struggled with, we couldn't be prouder of these boys!
