What was the connection?
* Homi Bhabha was not only a physicist, but also a passionate lover of art, music, and design. He believed that science and art were both expressions of human creativity.
* Bhabha admired Picasso's work and was a patron of modern art. He collected art and actively supported artists in India.
* While building the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Bhabha wanted it to be not just a scientific institution but also a cultural one, filled with important artworks.
* He reportedly invited Picasso to visit India and was interested in bringing Picasso's artistic influence to Indian cultural circles.
A fascinating story
When TIFR's new campus was being decorated in the early 1960s, Bhabha invited leading artists to contribute major artworks. He even reached out to Picasso, hoping the Spanish master would create work for the institute. Although Picasso never came to India, the invitation itself shows how highly Bhabha regarded him.
Why this matters
Most people know Bhabha as the architect of India's nuclear program. What is less known is that he believed:
"Great science and great art come from the same source: imagination."
Because of Bhabha's vision, TIFR today houses one of the most significant collections of modern Indian art within a scientific institution.
