On Memorial Day, we honor members of the Armed Forces who have died in the line of duty. With origins reaching back to 1868, New York was the first state to officially recognize it as a holiday in 1873. With the name standardized to “Memorial Day” in 1971, it was only one decade after that when Ridge Civic Association dedicated the memorial site we know today at the northeast corner of Route 25 & Ridge Road.
You can see the 1981 news clipping here and how the site looked 45 years ago. Ridge Civic still walks in the annual RFD Memorial Day Parade. Thank you to Ridge Fire Department for organizing, Senator Dean Murray for marching, Longwood High School Percussion Band for performing (and keeping us in step!), and to all who participated and attended.
