Have you ever wondered about the concrete sculptures in Richmond Art Center’s courtyard?

John Roeder was a Richmond resident and self-taught artist who worked as a gardener at Richmond Union High School while creating sculptures in his spare time. In 1961, Richmond Art Center presented his work in the group exhibition "Sculpture Court," followed by a solo exhibition, "John Roeder: Morning Prayer of a Gardener." After his death in 1964, a large collection of his sculptures was installed in the center’s courtyard, where visitors can still see them today.

Roeder’s work also caught the attention of photographer Imogen Cunningham. After seeing his sculptures at Richmond Art Center in 1961, Cunningham was so fascinated that she visited Roeder at home to photograph him and his work. Imogen Cunningham was one of the most influential American photographers of the twentieth century. A founding member of Group f/64, she helped advance a distinctly modern approach to photography rooted in sharp focus, close observation, and experimentation.

Have you seen our new art?

In celebration of Richmond Art Center’s 90th anniversary, two new artworks by local artists Hayley Ferreira and Adrian Delgado welcome visitors at our 25th Street and Barrett Avenue entrances. Part of the "Tomorrow Stories" project, the artworks imagine a hopeful future for Richmond while honoring the city’s history, natural landscape, working-class roots, and families.
