Today is a beautiful and historic day as the bias reduction bill was signed by Governor Spanberger as part of the Queen Candis Sickle Cell Act. We are grateful for the leadership of our chief patrons Senator Locke and Delegate Hayes, the advocacy and support of our coalition partners, the foundation laid by former VICPP staff member Dora Muhammad and all of the people of faith and goodwill that joined their voices in this fight for justice.

A huge congratulations to our long time volunteer, Louise!

Louise received the Volunteer Service Award at her congregation, First UU Church of Richmond, she was recognized for many of her volunteer efforts but especially for her volunteer efforts with us at VICPP. She works with us year long and especially helps out during the general assembly session and with preparation for our lobby day, Day for all People - which she has attended 14 times!

We are so grateful for Louise and her kind energy she always brings. Congratulations, Louise!

Last week, the Virginia Consensus for Higher Education in Prison wrapped up their final in-person strategic planning meeting and we could not be more excited about what's ahead. This process has been months in the making, and it's happening at exactly the right moment for the Commonwealth.

With the restoration of Pell Grant eligibility for incarcerated students, growing recognition of education as a public safety strategy, and an urgent need to address workforce shortages and longstanding inequities for justice-impacted individuals, the momentum has never been stronger.

A huge thank you to every single person who was a part of this process. Your time, energy, and dedication are already making a difference. We cannot wait to watch VCHEP thrive in the years to come!

On this blessed occasion of Eid Al-Adha, we stand in solidarity with our Muslim neighbors and communities across Virginia. May this season remind us all of the power of sacrifice, compassion, and justice. Eid Mubarak!

Amanda Nguyen is a Vietnamese American civil rights activist who refused to let a broken system have the last word.

After being assaulted in her final semester at Harvard, she said: "I became an activist because I needed civil rights and no one was going to write them for me." So she wrote them herself.

She founded Rise, a nonprofit advocating for the rights of sexual violence survivors, and authored the Sexual Assault Survivors' Bill of Rights, which President Obama signed into law in 2016 with historic, bipartisan support. Her model legislation has since inspired similar laws in more than 30 states and in countries around the world.

At the Virginia Interfaith Center, we stand alongside survivors, advocates, and changemakers who refuse to accept injustice as inevitable.

Our Executive Director, Rev. Dr. LaKeisha Cook stood with Del. Joshua Cole and advocates as Gov. Spanberger signed Virginia's Faith in Housing bill into law, a landmark "Yes In God's Backyard" measure that opens religious-owned property to affordable housing development.

The signature was official, but the victory belonged to everyone who fought for it, including our own Sheila Herlihy Hennessee, Director of Faith Organizing, whose fearless work on HB 1279 and housing advocacy made this moment possible even though she couldn't be there in person.

Today marks something bigger than a bill signing. With Governor Spanberger's signature, Paid Sick Days is now law in Virginia because no one should ever have to work through illness just to survive.
Hard fought and worth it.

Our hearts are broken. We stand in grief and solidarity with the Islamic Center of San Diego and the entire Muslim community following the devastating attack. Three lives, Amin Abdullah, Mansour Kaziha, and Nader Awad, were taken at a place of worship and peace. No one should fear for their life while praying. From Richmond, Virginia, our interfaith community wraps our arms around our Muslim siblings. 🤍
