36 years ago, CHDC set out to be a change agent for North Richmond, a neighborhood filled with blight and debris, left without federal and state investment, and in need of hope.

Today? Look around! North Richmond is vibrant. North Richmond is growing. And on Saturday, October 17, we're taking the next BIG step: breaking ground on Heritage Point Grocery Store, bringing fresh food to the neighborhood and putting an end to a food desert this community has lived with for far too long!

Come celebrate 36 years with us! next to the CHDC office
Groundbreaking ceremony, music, food, a Kids Zone, our Community Memory Wall, and a Building Communities Passport adventure that earns you food from our vendors while supplies last.

Bring your family. Bring your neighbors. Bring your joy.

We're grateful to every partner who has believed in what's possible for this community. 2026 has already been a big year: St. Paul Terrace broke ground in South Berkeley and Friendship Senior Housing has opened its doors in West Oakland, together adding 100 new affordable homes. And we're not done yet.

09/30/2026

As we're gathering information to celebrate CHDC's 36th year Anniversary, we realize that 2005 was a big year: HUD recognition, a tribute from Eden Housing for 15 years of work, and the City of Richmond honoring CHDC's growing impact. Fifteen years in, we were just getting started. - 36 years in, we're continuing to thrive.

Come join us as we celebrate 36 years with the community by hosting a block party at 1535 Fred Jackson Way, Richmond, CA. Learn more about our upcoming celebration and groundbreaking for the Heritage Point Grocery Market, check out our page -->.

Ready to shop for healthy food in North Richmond? Well the time is quickly approaching. North Richmond has gone years without a full service grocery store nearby. That changes this October. Heritage Grocery Store breaks ground October 17, bringing fresh, affordable food within walking distance for the first time in a long time. Learn more about our progress below:

Project Overview:
Location: 1540 Fred Jackson Way, Richmond, CA 94801 (adjacent to the Heritage Point housing complex).

Developer: Community Housing Development Corporation of North Richmond (CHDC), a local nonprofit and regional black led affordable housing developer.

Size: Approximately 3,100 square feet of retail and community grocery space.

Purpose: To combat local food deserts and provide low-income residents and seniors in North Richmond with convenient access to fresh produce and everyday essentials.

Affordable Housing Phase: The residential portion of Heritage Point was designed to bring much-needed affordable housing options back to the corridor.

Grocery Store Phase: CHDC advanced the pre-development and financing phases for the retail grocery market and will soon announce local operators to lease and run the space.

So we'll ask again . . . Are you ready to shop for healthy food options in North Richmond?
