This week FRIENDS is celebrating the life of Luna Mae Williams.

Mrs. Williams was an amazing person who spoiled the children and staff at FRIENDS with her delicious food for more than 25 years. As a cook at FRIENDS, she touched the lives of thousands of our children over the years. After her retirement, she very graciously returned (part-time) to the kitchens of the Robert L Taylor Child Development Center for 7 more years.

Our staff still talks about the smells and tastes that came from her kitchen, including cinnamon rolls, peanut butter cookies, sheet cakes and more. Our lives were made richer for knowing her, and we shall all miss her hearty laugh, tight hugs, and beautiful smile.

FRIENDS will reopen tomorrow (2/2) at 8am. Roads, parking lots, and sidewalks remain icy. Be patient, be careful, be respectful. Plan to leave early to navigate icy roads. Parking and to drop off areas have limited space and remain slippery. Use caution and drive/walk safely.

FRIENDS will be closed for FRIDAY (1/30).

For the last 4 days FRIENDS has worked hard to try to recover from the ice storm that left our community frozen in place. Despite hiring crews to clear our sidewalks and parking lots, our neighborhoods roads & sidewalks are still coated in a thick layer of ice and are simply too treacherous to risk staff, student and parent's wellbeing. We love our families, and cannot stand the idea of injuries or accidents.

We are monitoring this weekend's anticipated winter storm closely, and have crews on standby to hopefully reopen at our normal time on Monday. Thankfully next week's forecast (after the snow) also brings warmer temperatures. We can't wait to see you all then!

For Thursday (1/29), FRIENDS Association for Children will remain closed.

This decision was not made lightly, as we know many parents are being asked to return to work and public schools are closed.

This afternoon we once again checked on the state of the sidewalks, student drop-off areas, and parking lots at both of our Child Development Centers. It was immediately clear that our neighborhoods remain covered in hard, compacted, slippery ice. The conditions are treacherous for walkers and drivers alike and our centers are not accessible without significant safety concerns. Given these conditions, and the single-digit temperatures overnight, FRIENDS made the difficult decision to remain closed in the interest of safety for our staff, our families, and the kids.

We will (of course) re-evaluate access to our facilities tomorrow and look forward to seeing all of our children and families when we are able to reopen.
